Reporting to the Manager of Recreation Services, the Recreation Therapy Attendant will participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of various recreation activities (ex. cards, woodwork, music, etc.) that are designed to stimulate Resident awareness and involvement. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of large and small group recreation programs, one-on-one interventions and special events.

  • Organizes out trips; collecting money from resident trust accounts, ensuring the safety of Residents (before, during and after) and assisting with feeding or personal care if necessary.

  • Provides assistance in planning the monthly recreation calendar, suggesting program ideas and possible out trip destinations.

  • Works directly with Residents, volunteers, family members, Resident Care staff and Recreation Therapy team.

  • Works in close cooperation with Manager, Recreation Therapy; accepts and utilizes constructive criticism and displays initiative to complete activity related tasks and programs.

  • Researches and prepares programs in advance in order to achieve a positive experience by participants.

  • Record and track each Resident's participation level in programs, out trips, special events; documents any unusual behaviours in Residents' charts.

  • Supervises volunteers, delegating responsibilities and evaluating volunteer performance.

  • Through on-going communication, becomes knowledgeable of Resident's interests, needs and limitations.

  • Observes and reports any unusual behaviours and incidents to Resident Care staff and the Manager, Recreation Therapy.

  • Encourages Resident involvement and participation.

  • Assists in portering Residents to and from activities.

  • Ensures all work areas are cleaned, organized and sanitized before and after completion of programs.

  • Operates department equipment.

  • Informs Manager, Recreation Therapy of any special needs required for an activity.

  • Obtains necessary equipment, supplies and games materials, and delivers to activity locations, returning same at completion of activities.

Quality, Safety & Professional Standards  

  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all privacy legislation (AITA, POPA, HIA).
  • Comply with corporate policies, procedures, OH&S standards, and emergency preparedness protocols.
  • Actively participate in professional development and support a positive workplace culture.

Our Ideal Candidate Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma is required.
  • Recreation Therapy Assistant/Aide Certificate is preferred.
  • At least one year experience in recreation within a health care or community setting is preferred.
  • Experience in working with people who have multiple physical and cognitive disabilities.
  • Class 4 driver's license is preferred.

All successful candidates must have, before the start date:

  • A current and clear Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
  • A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months before the hire date.
