POSITION OVERVIEW:
BCU Financial is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Accountant to join its Finance team. This role supports accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day accounting operations with an increasing level of independence.
The Accountant plays a key role in month-end close activities, account reconciliations, and regulatory reporting, while gaining continued exposure to audits, treasury-related activities, and process improvement initiatives. This position is well suited for an accounting professional looking to deepen technical expertise within a financial institution.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior accountants and finance leadership, contribute to continuous improvement efforts, and help ensure the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the credit union's financial records.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepare and reconcile monthly financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with IFRS.
Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account analysis.
Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring timely resolution of reconciling items.
Record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing supporting documentation.
Assist with daily balancing and reconciliation between the banking system and the financial accounting system; investigate and resolve variances.
Review daily exception reports, correct GL mapping issues, and liaise with other departments to address discrepancies.
Assist in the preparation of monthly management reporting packages, including variance analysis and supporting narratives.
Maintain prepaid, accrual, and fixed asset schedules, including amortization calculations.
Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual regulatory reports and filings.
Assist with internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules and documentation.
Ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, documentation, and controls.
Participate in cross-training to support team coverage and continuity.
Assist with ad hoc projects and other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA designation in progress or intent to pursue CPA is preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in financial accounting or reporting.
Experience within a financial institution, credit union, or cooperative environment is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
Working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
Solid understanding of core accounting principles and financial reporting processes.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; strong working knowledge of MS Office applications.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Ability to work independently on routine deliverables while escalating complex matters appropriately.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with SQL considered an asset.
Familiarity with Fiserv DNA and/or Prologue systems is an advantage.
COMPENSATION:
Salary Range: $50,000 – $70,000 annually
Compensation for this role will be determined based on experience and qualifications. BCU Financial also offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
