The Senior Accountant supports the Finance function by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting while acting as a key business partner across Sales, Supply Chain, Operations, and Corporate Finance. This role plays a critical part in maintaining strong financial controls, supporting inventory and intercompany accounting, payroll reconciliation, and providing meaningful financial insight that supports operational decision-making.
The Senior Accountant collaborates with vendors, internal business partners, and the parent organization to coordinate and record financial activities, maintain compliance with accounting standards, and strengthen financial processes and controls.
Key Responsibilities:
General Accounting & Financial Reporting
Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes by preparing journal entries, analyzing results, and ensuring completeness and accuracy within assigned responsibility areas.
Provide backup support to the Controller, including assistance with financial statement preparation and close coordination.
Prepare, review, and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts monthly, including investigation and resolution of discrepancies and root causes.
Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts including wages, benefits, deductions, accruals, and employer remittances to ensure payroll costs are accurately recorded and compliant with regulatory and internal reporting requirements.
Work collaboratively with Payroll and HR teams to investigate and resolve payroll variances, accrual adjustments, and reporting discrepancies.
Identify financial risks, control gaps, and improvement opportunities and present findings and recommendations to Finance leadership.
Manage intercompany accounting activities with the parent and affiliated companies, including validation of charges, resolution of discrepancies, expense recording, and balance confirmations.
Act as a finance partner to Sales, Supply Chain, and Merchandising by supporting margin analysis, investigating discrepancies, and providing guidance on accounting policies and standards.
Prepare and monitor cash flow forecasts and support compliance reporting requirements for financing partners.
Inventory & Equipment Accounting
Record and analyze inventory-related financial transactions, including valuation, aging and obsolescence reserves, shrink adjustments, and cost corrections.
Prepare inventory-related journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, financial reports, and supporting commentary.
Partner with Sales and Supply Chain teams to ensure inventory transactions, special orders, and pricing adjustments align with accounting policies and financial standards.
Support equipment financing activities by working with Sales and floor plan financing partners to ensure accurate recording and timely payment processing.
Collaborate with Supply Chain and Loss Prevention teams to coordinate and execute annual physical inventory counts, analyze results, investigate variances, and record financial impacts.
Partner with Pricing and Vendor Management teams to ensure accurate recording, reconciliation, and collection of vendor cost programs and rebates.
Process Improvement, Internal Controls & Projects
Review, document, and evaluate accounting, payroll reconciliation, and inventory processes to ensure strong internal controls and alignment with best practices.
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, accuracy, and risk mitigation across finance processes.
Participate in cross-functional projects supporting business initiatives, system implementations, and operational improvements.
Collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to identify system enhancements, reporting improvements, and process optimization opportunities.
Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making.
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA designation or active enrollment in the CPA program (PEP/PREP) is strongly preferred.
Minimum five (5) years of progressive accounting experience in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Experience reconciling payroll and related accruals is considered an asset.
Experience with inventory accounting or equipment / dealership accounting is considered an asset.
Experience working with ERP or dealership management systems (IntelliDealer experience is an asset).
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, payroll accounting, and financial controls.
Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills.
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities with high attention to detail.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Demonstrated ability to identify process improvements and implement practical solutions.
