JOB OVERVIEW

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Continuous Improvement Intern to join our dynamic team. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply Lean Six Sigma principles within a complex aerospace repairing environment. The intern will support initiatives aimed at reducing waste, improving workflow, increasing safety, and enhancing productivity across the engine MRE shop floor. 

This position is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Operations Management who is passionate about process optimization and problem-solving. 

Responsibilities:

  • Process Analysis: Assist in mapping current-state workflows (Value Stream Mapping) for engine disassembly, cleaning, inspection, piece part repair and assembly processes to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies. 
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Gather and analyze operational data (cycle times, turnaround times, scrap rates) using Excel and other data visualization tools to support improvement projects. 
  • 6S Implementation: Support the implementation and auditing of 6S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, Safety) practices within the workshop, millwright, and work cells to ensure a safe and organized environment. 
  • Standard Work Development: Assist various departments in documenting and updating standard work processes and visual work instructions to ensure consistency and quality. 
  • Project Management: Manage small-scale improvement projects from conception to implementation, tracking progress and reporting results to leadership. 
  • Safety Focus: Identify potential safety hazards in the work environment and propose ergonomic or layout improvements to mitigate risks. 
  • Reporting: Create presentations and reports summarizing project findings, cost savings, and impact on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). 

Qualifications:

Education: 

  • Currently in 3rd year or later of a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field. 
  • Available for an 8-month co-op term (4-month applications will not be considered).

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Visio. 
  • Basic understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles (DMAIC, 6S, Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Analysis). 
  • Familiarity with CAD software, (e.g., AutoCAD) is a plus but not required. 
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools, (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a plus but not required. 

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact with shop floor technicians. 
  • High level of integrity and commitment to safety and quality. 
  • Intermediate level knowledge of English is necessary.
