INTRODUCTION:

Commissionaires Great Lakes (CGL) is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1925 on a mandate that prioritizes providing meaningful employment for veterans and others committed to the well-being of Canadians primarily in security guard and related services. Spanning Central and Southwestern Ontario, our services are customized to respond to the dynamic and evolving security needs of both private and public sector clients. These include uniformed guard, mobile response and support services, by-law enforcement and identification services. 

We are currently seeking a Commissionaire to join our growing team. This posting is for an existing vacancy

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for safeguarding property against theft, damage, and unauthorized activity. The role ensures the safety and security of all individuals on the premises by conducting routine patrols, identifying irregularities, and inspecting safety and fire‑protection equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Patrol and Surveillance

  • Guard, patrol, and monitor areas to prevent safety hazards, theft, violence, and violations of organizational policies.
  • Maintain a visible presence among visitors, patrons, and employees to preserve order and protect property.
  • Conduct systematic patrols of the facilities to detect signs of intrusion and verify the security of doors, windows, gates, and other access points.

2. Emergency Response

  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations, including fires, chemical spills, medical incidents, and threatening communications.
  • Investigate alarms, disturbances, and unusual activities to determine appropriate action.

3. Customer Service

  • Deliver customer service in alignment with company standards and expectations.
  • Provide escort services for occupants upon request.
  • Offer public assistance, including lockout support and general information.

4. Reporting and Communication

  • Immediately report incidents, hazards, or irregularities to designated company and client personnel.
  • Answer telephone calls during non-business hours to relay messages, respond to inquiries, and provide information.
  • Prepare detailed written reports documenting daily activities, equipment, or property damage, theft, unauthorized presence, and other notable occurrences.

5. Task Completion

  • Complete all assigned daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities in accordance with operational requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

6. Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize proper body mechanics while performing all tasks.
  • Maintain continuous situational awareness and vigilance.
  • Demonstrate clear thinking and sound judgment during crises or high-stress situations.
  • Exhibit empathy and professionalism when assisting employees and addressing inquiries.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and interact appropriately with all stakeholders.
  • Maintain open communication with the Security team, sharing relevant information that may impact operations.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn all aspects of the position and progress through established level system within the required timeframe.
  • Obtain Security Control certification within six months of hire, in accordance with level-progression policy.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • *MUST* Ontario Security Guard License
  • *MUST* Valid First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to walk for 1 – 2 hours within each four-hour period
  • Ability to handle potential exposure to varying weather and/or temperature conditions
  • Flexibility to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as operational needs arise
  • Building safety and facilities knowledge
  • Knowledge of escalation policy and procedure
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, ability to speak French is consider an asset
  • Excellent customer service and reception skills

WHAT THE JOB OFFERS YOU:

  • Rate of Pay: $23.00 per hour
  • Working Hours: 0000 – 1200, Sunday; 0000 – 0800, Monday to Thursday
  • Location: 1 Commerce Valley Drive, Markham, ON
  • Transit Accessible: Yes
  • This position is a temporary role to provide maternity leave coverage. The assignment is expected to last for the duration of the leave period, with an anticipated end date to be confirmed.
