Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Medical Group are recruiting a Division Chief for General Surgery. The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership across the full range of division service areas, including the tripartite missions of the academic institution: clinical and administrative service, education, and research.
This academic role in the Department of Surgery at IUSM will work with and represent 21 faculty members and 11 advanced practice providers covering 7 hospitals in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.In 2025, the division saw over 7,800 new patients and performed over 6,600 surgeries.The division provides a comprehensive range of surgical services, encompassing colon & rectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery. In addition, the division is home to a nationally recognized Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program, known for its excellence in patient outcomes, innovation, and adherence to national quality standards. This breadth of services enables the team to deliver highly specialized, multi-disciplinary care to a diverse patient population.The division also supports advanced surgical training through its Fellowship Council accredited Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Surgery fellowship, offering one fellowship position annually.In addition, the division plays a significant role in surgical education, supporting one of the nation’s largest general surgery residency programs by training approximately 58 residents and offering extensive clinical exposure, mentorship, and multidisciplinary learning opportunities across diverse service lines.

The ideal candidate will be a recognized, clinically active academic surgeon with strong leadership skills, a reputation for surgical excellence, and a record of achievement in clinical work, education, research, and administration. This individual will be skilled in collaborative, relationship-oriented leadership and have strong experience bringing together disciplines across academic and clinical environments to drive program growth, impact, and investment – regionally and nationally. The Division Chief must bring a point-of-view on the future of general surgery reflective of the latest opportunities and challenges in academic settings. This individual will be responsible for shaping and creating the division’s future, emphasizing growth, expansion, thoughtful investment, and partnership. They will communicate in a fashion that inspires others. The ideal candidate will be able to create momentum and serve as an agent for change and continuous improvement across patient care, teaching, and research settings. Critically, they must demonstrate transparency, a deep sense of professionalism, an unwavering ethical compass, and strong support for interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaboration.
Expectations:
Expectations for the Division Chief include, but are not limited to, providing strategic leadership for the division by establishing annual academic priorities, mentoring the faculty, conducting comprehensive annual faculty reviews, and actively participating in graduate medical education. The new division chief will have the opportunity to think strategically and reorganize care delivery across the Indianapolis metro region and beyond. The role also encompasses oversight of research initiatives, ensuring strong division financial performance, and leading the development and management of a substantial operating budget and annual discretionary funds. Additional responsibilities include preparing and presenting financial and operational performance reports, as well as fostering effective collaboration with all functional areas across the Department of Surgery, IU Health Medical Group, affiliated hospitals, and partner physician organizations. We expect the division chief to continue to raise the national profile of this outstanding team.
Basic Qualifications:
A medical degree (MD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, MD/PhD, DO) or equivalent with completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency.
Board certified in Surgery or their appropriate surgical subspecialty.
Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of associate or full professor.
Relevant administrative experience and evidence of effective interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
A history of academic leadership, industry or grant funded research (desired, but not required), and a nationally recognized reputation in general surgery.
Possession of, or eligibility for, an unrestricted medical license in the State of Indiana.
