Primary Responsibilities:
The Artificial Intelligence Research Specialist will strengthen the union's capacity to safeguard and advance workers' rights in the context of employer and government adoption of artificial intelligence.
This role focuses on analyzing, monitoring, and responding to AI-driven transformations that impact collective bargaining, job security, working conditions, and public sector employment.
Working collaboratively with Senior Research Officers, Negotiators, and cross-organizational teams, the AI Research Specialist provides senior-level research, analysis, and strategic advice on AI-related issues affecting union members.
What you will bring to the table:
Education/Experience
Advanced degree in computer science, data science, public administration, political economy, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience in labor relations, public sector policy, or advocacy is highly desirable.
Knowledge
The work requires extensive knowledge of labour relations and labour law, as it requires the ability to research, interpret, and apply many pieces of legislation in the collective bargaining process.
The work requires extensive knowledge of social sciences research techniques and practices, both qualitative and quantitative.
The work requires extensive knowledge of organisational structures, and the ability to assess work descriptions, job functions and classification plans in order to assess and analyse pay data.
The work requires extensive knowledge of the negotiations process and methods of alternate dispute resolution, such as mediation and conciliation, and the ability to apply this knowledge to the negotiation of collective agreements and in making representations on pay demands before conciliation boards.
Good research and analytical skills.
Understanding of and commitment to union and equity principles.
An above average ability to communicate orally and in writing in English or French or in both official languages (according to the position's requirements).
Abilities
Ability to work independently and under pressure.
Ability to work with spreadsheet and database software programs.
Ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret data.
What you need to know:
Second language level indicated above is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Preferred candidates may have their second language skills assessed as part of the hiring process. However, valid federal government SLE results can be used toward this.
