Power Your Future with Qualus in our T&D Canada business as a Drafting Manager. Reporting into the Engineering Director, this position wil be based in our Vancouver BC office on a hybrid schedule. This role focuses on leading the drafting discipline for transmission and distribution utility design projects, driving quality, standards governance, continuous improvement and mentorship to a multidisciplinary drafting team.
Responsibilities
Provide functional leadership and technical direction for the drafting discipline within the Transmission & Distribution engineering department
Lead, manage, and mentor a drafting team of more than 15 drafters supporting utility transmission, substation, and distribution design projects
Partner with the Drafting Coordinator to ensure effective execution of workload plans, staffing strategies, and delivery commitments
Act as the senior technical authority for drafting practices, standards, and methodologies on utility design projects
Provide technical oversight and guidance for the development of drawings and models produced under the supervision of Engineers or Designers, including:
2D and 3D general arrangements, sections, and elevations
Electrical room, equipment, grounding, and panel layouts
Single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring drawings
Overhead, crossing, and underground transmission & distribution designs
Bill of materials and cable, duct schedules
Establish, maintain, and enforce drafting, CAD, and BIM standards aligned with utility client requirements and industry best practices
Ensure compliance with electrical safety design codes, utility standards, and internal engineering procedures
Oversee and continuously improve QA/QC processes to ensure accuracy, and consistency of all drafting deliverables
Review complex or high-risk drawings and resolve technical issues, conflicts, or deviations from standards
Collaborate with Engineers, Project Managers, and Engineering Managers to align drafting deliverables with project scope and quality expectations
Support project planning and execution by providing drafting input related to standards, complexity, and execution risks
Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to CAD/BIM tools, automation, templates, libraries, and workflows
Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and professional development support to drafters at all levels
Contribute to hiring decisions, performance management, and succession planning for the drafting team
Qualifications
Diploma in Computer Aided Design Technology from an accredited University or College, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum 12 years of drafting experience in utility transmission, substation, and distribution design
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a leadership, supervisory, or senior technical role within an engineering or utility design environment
Extensive experience with AutoCAD in a utility-focused design setting
Strong working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD 3D, Revit, and Civil 3D
Proficient in: MS Office, 2D CAD drafting,3D modelling and BIM workflows
Strong knowledge of utility design standards, and industrial drafting standards
Experience creating plans, profiles, and cross-sections from surveys and mapping data
Demonstrated ability to act as a technical authority and mentor for drafting staff
High attention to detail with the ability to maintain consistency across large volumes of work
Open-minded, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Effective organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities across multiple projects without direct task-level coordination
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

The expected compensation range for this position is based upon several factors, including but not limited to education, qualifications, prior relevant work experience and work location.
