Position purpose :
Leads the development, implementation and assessment of training and development for unionized Residence Life student staff.
Ensures hiring, training and performance management practices align with learning outcomes and assessment for student staff within the curricular learning model in residence.
Continuously assesses and evaluates initiatives to ensure the needs of all residence students are being met including all undergraduate, graduate, and international students. The objective of these initiatives is intended to support the University mandate for academic success and student learning outside the classroom.
Collaborates on training and development activities for Wellness and Recreation including needs assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation of all student staff training delivered in the sector. This includes leading the Training and Development working group for the Wellness and Recreation sector.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Leads the development, implementation and assessment of training and development initiatives for unionized Residence Life student staff in a curricular learning model. Applies equity, diversity, and recovery principles in the delivery of services and support. Serves as primary contact for, and actively collaborates with, a variety of stakeholders in the delivery of training and development in residence and within the Wellness and Recreation sector.
Provides leadership and guidance to the Residence Life team to ensure staff have the training and resources needed to deliver services, programs and support that meet the unique needs of a diverse student population in residence. This includes creating and continually improving training manuals, handbooks and other resources as required.
Liaises with key campus stakeholders to ensure all training and development initiatives are delivered according to the principles and objectives of Wellness and Recreation's mandate, and in compliance with established policies and guidelines. The incumbent works to ensure training and development initiatives meet stakeholder expectations and needs, encourages student participation in the University and broader communities, and contributes to a positive student experience overall.
Ensures that staff are properly trained to deliver responses and supports for a broad range of issues and challenges that surface in a student residence community, including addressing and managing student behavior, managing and resolving conflicts, and managing risk and incident response.
Coordinates the assessment of all training and development initiatives offered to student staff in residence while taking into account current best practices and trends in student development theory and student interests and needs. Thoroughly assesses, on an ongoing basis, the effectiveness and impact of training and development initiatives delivered by the sector and ensures continuous improvement, including developing performance indicators and establishing effective measurement methods.
Researches and networks with practitioners in the field of training and curriculum development to devise and develop best practices and produce resources, training and strategies that will increase the effectiveness of training and development initiatives in residence.
Supports the Manager, Residence Life with training and onboarding Residence Life Coordinators including creating and continually improving manuals, handbooks and other resources as required and identifying best practices in training and development for professional residence life staff.
Liaises with other Wellness and Recreation staff to ensure hiring, training and performance management practices align with learning outcomes and assessment for student staff within the curricular model.
What you will bring :
Bachelor's degree in education, educational psychology, social sciences, or related field (or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience).
A minimum of 3 years' experience in practical and theoretical knowledge of training or curriculum development in higher education.
A minimum of 3 years' experience in training, program or curriculum design, implementation and assessment in a college or university residence environment.
A minimum of 3 years' experience in post-secondary or closely related settings with progressive administrative and supervisory responsibilities.
Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal) in English and French.
Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and residence curriculum in higher education.
Knowledge of Student Affairs and the educational and student developmental functions of a university residence system.
Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing training, student learning or program/service delivery.
Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities in ways that build trust and confidence.
Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behavior, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students, faculty, and staff, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
Experience and knowledge of change management principles and methodologies.
Ability to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in an inter-professional environment with external agencies.
