About Micromart
Micromart is building the platform for unattended retail. We empower entrepreneurs to turn any location into a retail opportunity, from offices and condos to gyms, hotels, and other shared spaces. Our focus is on giving entrepreneurs powerful tools that are simple to use, while delivering a fast, intuitive shopping experience for shoppers.
Often described as Shopify for physical commerce, Micromart provides the infrastructure that powers unattended retail in the real world.
Our systems operate across thousands of physical locations in North America, and reliability directly impacts operator revenue and customer trust. We are scaling rapidly, with significant growth ahead.
Our Team
Micromart launched just over a year ago and is now used in thousands of locations across North America. We're a small and growing team working closely across product, backend systems, smart store systems, and operations. Work here is end to end. That means thinking through problems, making pragmatic tradeoffs, shipping code, and improving systems over time.
As we scale, backend reliability becomes foundational to our growth.
How You Can Help
As a Senior Backend Reliability Engineer, you will focus on improving the stability, scalability, and operational resilience of Micromart's backend systems. Our backend platform supports thousands of connected smart stores and edge devices operating in real-world network conditions.
You will work in our and TypeScript services to reduce production risk, improve performance, and strengthen data integrity across core APIs, payments, messaging, and device-facing workflows.
You will analyze system behavior under load, identify failure patterns, and implement structural improvements to prevent recurring incidents. As transaction volume and deployments grow, you will help evolve backend architecture and operational practices to ensure systems remain predictable and maintainable.
We process millions of dollars in transactions each month, and backend reliability directly impacts operator revenue and customer trust. This role participates in on-call rotation and incident response as part of shared ownership of production systems.
This is a hands-on software engineering role focused on building systems that are resilient by design.
At Micromart, you will
Prevent retry storms, cascading failures, and systemic outages
Design and implement resilient patterns including rate limiting, idempotency, and safe retry logic
Improve database and caching performance as we scale
Harden background jobs and asynchronous workflows
Improve payment authorization success rates and reduce unnecessary retry fees
Improve messaging reliability and cost control
Improve dashboards, logging, and alert quality
Lead incident reviews and drive permanent corrective actions
Strengthen deployment safety, rollouts, and rollback mechanisms
Collaborate across backend, smart store, and payments teams to design systems that fail gracefully
What You Bring To The Team
Strong experience building and operating production backend systems
Solid fundamentals in distributed systems and failure modes
Experience handling real production incidents and preventing recurrence
Strong experience with and TypeScript
Experience scaling Postgres-backed systems
Experience designing and operating scalable cloud-hosted systems
Strong understanding of database performance, indexing, and caching patterns
Experience designing resilient asynchronous systems and background job workflows
Ability to reason about performance, scalability, and system behavior under load
A strong sense of ownership and initiative in ambiguous environments
Nice to Have
Experience with payments systems and transactional integrity
Experience with messaging systems (SMS, email, push) at scale
Experience improving platform architecture during periods of rapid growth
Startup experience where ownership mattered more than process
Experience supporting systems that interact with distributed edge devices
Our Values
We're driven by ambitious, mission-focused thinking and a deep commitment to earning customer trust. We value craftsmanship, simplicity, and quality, and we're intentional about how we build, the tradeoffs we make, and the problems we choose to solve.
We believe in getting things done thoughtfully, improving continuously, and working closely together to build durable systems that work in the real world.
Why Micromart
Reliability is foundational to Micromart's platform. Our smart stores operate continuously, and entrepreneurs and shoppers depend on our systems to work every time. As a Backend Reliability Engineer, your work directly impacts uptime, trust, and the ability for our platform to scale reliably across thousands of locations.
We believe software should empower people to build real businesses in the physical world. Micromart exists to give entrepreneurs practical, durable tools to create opportunity where people live and work, and your work will directly support that.
This year marks a major growth phase for Micromart. We've achieved a lot with a very small team, built the core smart store product and the platform that powers it, and are now focused on scaling, shipping new product capabilities, and raising the bar on reliability and our technical stack. If you enjoy owning real systems and pushing them to the next level, there's a lot to dig into.
