Job Summary:
The Production Lead (Packing) is a key player in overseeing the daily operations within the packing area. Reporting directly to the Production Manager, they are responsible for ensuring packing schedules are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with quality standards. They coordinate workflow across the packing team, monitor KPIs, and ensure adherence to established procedures. This role requires strong knowledge of production and packing processes and strong problem-solving, mathematical, and communication skills.
Accountabilities (Outcomes & Measures):
- Production Performance – Department meets or exceeds daily and weekly output, quality, efficiency, and other KPI targets.
- Safety & Quality – Work is conducted in adherence to company safety and quality standards and procedures.
- Process Execution - Packing processes are followed, monitored, and continuously improved to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Reporting & Continuous Improvement - Accurate and timely packing reporting supports data-driven decisions, and improvement opportunities are actively identified and implemented.
- People Leadership - Staff are effectively coached, developed, and performance-managed to achieve individual/departmental goals while maintaining organizational cultural expectations.
Responsibilities (Tasks & Duties):
Production Performance
- Provide daily direction and process oversight to Assembly Technicians.
- Coordinate and monitor daily packing activities to ensure orders are packed accurately and on schedule, meeting departmental KPIs.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks to review departmental goals, performance, and upcoming priorities.
- Allocate tasks and resources to ensure workflow efficiency.
- Monitor packing output, labelling accuracy, and finished good quality prior to shipping.
- Address packing challenges and escalate complex issues to the Production Manager.
- Ensure equipment and tools are used properly and report issues to Maintenance.
Safety & Quality
- Enforce safe work practices and compliance with company safety policies.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and participate in incident investigations as needed.
- Verify adherence to quality standards and documentation requirements.
- Report and help resolve non-conformances or quality issues promptly.
Process Execution
- Ensure employees follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Recommend updates to processes or documentation to improve clarity, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Collaborate with the Continuous Improvement Coordinator to test and implement process improvements.
- Support training on new or revised procedures as directed by the Continuous Improvement Coordinator.
- Assist in the rollout and upkeep of 5S initiatives to maintain an organized and efficient work environment.
- Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of workstations, enforcing daily housekeeping.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Provide regular updates to the Production Manager on progress, issues, and needs.
- Maintain accurate documentation of packing metrics, attendance, and incidents.
- Participate in KPI reviews and support data collection and analysis for performance tracking.
- Identify recurring process issues and propose solutions to reduce waste and improve throughput.
- Coordinate with other departments (Maintenance, Quality, Warehouse, Machine Shop) to support production flow.
People Leadership
- Lead and coach direct reports to achieve departmental goals.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins, semi-annual reviews, and development discussions.
- Identify training needs, coordinate cross-training, and support onboarding for new employees.
- Address attendance, conduct, and performance issues promptly in partnership with the Production Manager and Human Resources.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented culture focused on communication, accountability, and respect.
What We're Looking For:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Post-secondary education in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field is an asset.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in a production/manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing, 5S principles, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems (MISys preferred).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a team towards a common goal.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Valid driver's license and vehicle.
