The Senior Manager leads the Accounting team, including the Accountant, Accounting Support, and Accounts Payable functions. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, developing and maintaining accounting procedures, and supporting financial planning, audit readiness, and strategic initiatives that strengthen financial governance across the credit union.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Financial Accounting & Reporting
· Oversee the preparation, reconciliation, and analysis of financial statements and management reports.
· Ensure accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of general ledger entries and subsidiary records.
· Lead month-end and year-end closing processes in coordination with Finance and Risk leadership.
· Maintain and improve accounting systems, policies, and controls to support compliance and operational efficiency.
Controllership & Compliance
· Ensure compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), regulatory requirements, and internal financial policies.
· Monitor adherence to accounting standards and manage updates as regulations or credit union policies evolve.
· Maintain documentation and audit trails to ensure readiness for internal and external audits.
· Oversee tax reporting, statutory filings, and financial compliance with provincial and federal requirements.
Operational Oversight & Process Improvement
· Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accruals, reconciliations, and journal entries.
· Review and streamline accounting processes to improve accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
· Support system improvements, automation opportunities, and accounting software optimization.
· Collaborate with IT, Risk, and Operations to strengthen financial data quality and reporting capabilities.
Financial Analysis & Business Partnership
· Provide financial insights, variance analysis, and recommendations to the CFRO and Executive Leadership Team.
· Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making through reliable financial data and analysis.
· Partner with functional leaders to ensure alignment between financial practices and business operations.
People Leadership & Development
· Lead, coach, and develop a team of accounting professionals, including the Accountant, Accounting Support, and Accounts Payable positions.
· Establish clear performance goals, foster accountability, and promote professional development and continuous learning.
· Cultivate a collaborative, high-performing culture that emphasizes integrity, accuracy, and service excellence.
Board & Executive Reporting
· Support the CFRO in preparing financial reports, analyses, and presentations for the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors.
· Provide accurate, timely data and insight into financial performance, variances, and emerging risks.
· Contribute to discussions and recommendations related to financial strategy and policy.
Other Duties
· Participate in organizational projects requiring financial or accounting expertise.
· Support annual audits, external reviews, and regulatory reporting activities.
· Perform additional duties as assigned by the CFRO.
Education & Qualifications
· Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
· Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with 3–5 years of team leadership experience preferred.
· Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Professional accounting designation (CPA – Chartered Professional Accountant) in good standing.
· Strong knowledge of IFRS, internal controls, and financial reporting practices.
· Proven experience managing accounting operations, including general ledger, reconciliations, and accounts payable.
Preferred
· Experience working in a credit union, cooperative, or financial services organization.
· Knowledge of financial risk management principles and regulatory compliance for financial institutions.
· Proficiency with ERP or financial management systems and advanced Excel skills.
· Experience leading process improvement or automation initiatives within finance.
· Strong understanding of corporate governance and board reporting practices.
