Who are we looking for?
Reporting to the Manager, Fleet Services, and working closely with another Heavy Equipment Technician, this role ensures operational readiness and compliance of the Town's diverse fleet.
As a Heavy Equipment Technician, you will be responsible for inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs while ensuring full compliance with Alberta's Commercial Vehicle legislation and the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP).
This role requires strong technical expertise, independent judgment, and a proactive approach to fleet reliability and safety.

What are some of the duties of the Heavy Equipment Technician?
Coordinate with the Fleet Manager to schedule, document, and track inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
Inspect, maintain, and repair automotive vehicles, commercial trucks, turf equipment, tractors, trailers, mobile equipment, and attachments according to manufacturer specifications.
Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic faults using computerized and manual testing equipment.
Interpret work orders, schematics, and technical manuals.
Research, source, and order parts and components; coordinate delivery timelines.
Repair or replace defective components using hand and power tools.
Test repaired equipment to ensure proper performance and compliance.
Maintain accurate service records and documentation.
Monitor shop inventory and manage supplies within maintenance budgets.
Respond to internal customer inquiries and support resolution of operational issues.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
Participate in toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and safety programs.
Provide after-hours service or emergency support as required.
Collaborate with fleet users and provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance when needed.
Identify, source, and order parts to support maintenance and operational needs
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
Education and Experience:
Required:
Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician certification, or Interprovincial Red Seal recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience using Fleet Information Management Software (FIMS) is an asset.
Experience working with electrical and hydraulic systems across a diverse fleet is an asset.
Municipal fleet experience is considered an asset.
Skills and Abilities:
Required:
Working knowledge of Alberta's Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) and National Safety Code (NSC).
Strong mechanical aptitude with experience servicing engines, electronics, and precision equipment.
Knowledge of hydraulic, electronic, and electrical systems.
Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical documentation.
Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office Suite, timesheets, electronic repair manuals, email).
Analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with industry standards.
Experience operating shop machinery (drill press, welders, grinders).
Personal set of Heavy Equipment Technician hand tools and toolbox required.
Strong troubleshooting and overhaul capabilities.
Ability to work independently with sound judgment.
Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment.
Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills.
Frequent lifting and moving of heavy materials and equipment.
Frequent bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and working in confined or awkward positions.
Sustained standing and hands-on mechanical work.
Certifications, Licenses and/or Designations:
Required:
Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement.
Clean Criminal Record including Vulnerable Sector Check.
Participation in the Town's Minimum General Safety Training program.
Additional Requirements
Personal set of Heavy Equipment Technician hand tools and toolbox required.

The hourly rate for the position is between 42.44/hr and 43.73/hr and is based on a 40 hour work week and is unionized through Teamsters.
Successful candidate will be required to complete a 10-year commercial driver's abstract review prior to the interview.
