Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Generation Design Department. Under the general direction of the Team Lead or delegate, provide technical expertise in and lead the planning, procurement, design, construction and commissioning of hydraulic generators, generator refurbishment, excitation system, governor system, generator automation, control, metering, and auxiliary systems for all generation stations. In collaboration with other engineering groups, lead technical discussions to ensure that these systems meet technical requirements, industry regulations and provide long-term system reliability.
Responsibilities:
Prepare and oversee preparation of scope development, designs, specifications, reports, standards and programs for hydraulic generator refurbishment, new generators, generator automation, control, monitoring and auxiliary systems for new and existing generating stations to ensure quality standards and design criteria are met by project teams, consultants, suppliers, and contractors.
Serve as an on-site technical expert to assist or lead the commissioning of generators and auxiliary systems.
Take the lead design engineer role and perform a coordinating function on complex & multidisciplinary projects.
Mentor and develop junior engineers in the areas of design work in high profile strategic projects.
Act as a specialized resource to the corporation in handling complex technical/business problems and analysis, including performing complex computer calculations to verify generator parameters.
Liaise with other departments, divisions & business units for correlation of design criteria and data and to ensure that construction and commissioning meet the design standards.
Lead evaluation of proposals, compile final recommendations and manage design work performed by external engineering consultants.
Review and approve shop and design drawings, witness manufacturer's factory and site tests and liaise directly with suppliers, contractors, and consultants to ensure they meet design criteria, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain an advanced awareness and understanding of applicable engineering/safety standards and legislation at a Provincial and National level.
Contribute to strategy development & lead development of design standards with respect to hydraulic generator design and various generator control equipment.
Qualifications:
Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing and a minimum of seven years' of electrical design experience including four years' experience in design of hydraulic generators and associated generator control equipment.
Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
Advanced knowledge of hydro-generator design and construction as it relates to generator overhauls.
Advanced knowledge of generator and generator auxiliary systems operation, especially related to generator commissioning.
Working knowledge and understanding of generating station controls, joint controls, excitation, and governing systems.
Working knowledge and understanding of UCMS, generator protection, transformers, station service systems, generator switchgear, station 125/250 Vdc systems.
Working knowledge and understanding of Arc Flash Hazard Analysis & assessments.
Willingness to travel to generating stations and perform commissioning activities as required.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of the safety rules and operation of hydraulic generating stations.
Advanced knowledge of the Manitoba Electrical Code and IEEE/IEC hydro-electric generation, monitoring, and control standards.
Proven ability to determine design details for major equipment in conjunction with manufacturer's engineers.
Proven ability to work effectively with various disciplines on multidisciplinary projects.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical project stakeholders.
Possess and maintain a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $52.88-$72.45 Hourly, $101,332.40-$138,828.30 Annually.
