The Fabrication Co-op student will support daily fabrication shop operations in a heavy manufacturing and nuclear-quality controlled environment. The student will assist with sandblasting, material handling, preparation for welding and painting, shop housekeeping, and production support tasks while working under the supervision of qualified tradespeople.
This position provides exposure to industrial automation manufacturing and nuclear-industry quality standards.
What You'll Be Doing:Sandblasting & Surface Preparation
- Operate sandblast equipment under supervision
- Prepare weldments and fabricated parts for paint and coating
- Mask threaded features, machined surfaces, nameplates, and inspection areas
- Clean parts to remove mill scale, rust, oil, and contamination
- Perform post-blast blow-off and cleaning to meet coating requirements
- Stage components for paint department
General Shop Support
- Material handling using pallet jacks, carts, and cranes (training provided)
- Assist welders and fitters with part staging and fit-up preparation
- Deburring and grinding edges of fabricated components
- Assist in part kitting for assemblies
- Assist in packaging and shipment preparation
- Label and organize parts per job traveler
Nuclear-Quality & Housekeeping Duties
- Maintain shop cleanliness and FOD (Foreign Object Debris) control
- Segregate carbon steel vs stainless steel tools and materials
- Support material traceability (tagging, stamping, traveler handling)
- Follow documented procedures and work instructions
- Assist with tool organization and controlled storage
- Support inventory and consumables restocking
Safety Responsibilities
- Wear required PPE (respirator, blast hood, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots)
- Follow lockout/tagout and confined blasting procedures
- Follow respiratory protection and dust control procedures
- Report hazards immediately
- Participate in daily toolbox talks
- Currently enrolled in High School, College, or Technical program
- Able to lift 50 lb (23 kg)
- Comfortable working in a noisy industrial environment
- Mechanically inclined
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Interest in welding, machining, millwright, or manufacturing trades
- Previous shop, farm, automotive, or construction experience preferred
- WHMIS 2015 training
- Working at Heights (asset)
- Students should be enrolled in a post-secondary academic program that requires successful completion of a co-op/work term.
