The Climate and Environmental department of the Climate Action, Planning and Development Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Environmental Specialist. Reporting to the Environmental Stewardship Supervisor, this position offers 37.5 hours weekly, starting approximately April 1, 2026, until September 30, 2026.

The Environmental Specialist manages, monitors, implements, analyses, writes reports and makes recommendations on environmental and conservation projects. This role is expected to manage projects efficiently, and to provide accurate recommendations that meet federal and provincial legislation and municipal processes/bylaws for a variety of operational projects. The Environmental Specialist carries out field work such as water/sediment quality monitoring, fish salvages, geese management, riparian vegetation management, habitat assessments and biodiversity and environmental monitoring and prepare interim and year end written reports. Public education and engagement are required as part of the scope of work being undertaken.

Qualified candidates have completed at minimum 2 years of post-secondary program in biology, environmental management or science, natural resources, wildlife resource management or a related discipline in combination with at least 3-5 years of experience in a similar role working with hydrologists, engineers, biologists, and volunteers. By the start date, candidates will hold an Electrofishing Certification.  Qualified candidates have experience with data analysis, report writing, water/sediment quality sampling and analysis, animal handling, conducting field sampling and assessments, wildlife and ecosystem monitoring and identification, plus general habitat assessment procedures, are familiar with local flora, fauna and are familiar with the provincial wildlife and instream works permitting system, the Water Sustainability Act, the Contaminated Sites Regulation, and related fish, and aquatic regulations. Candidates must be physically able to perform moderate outdoor work in all weather conditions. The starting wage for this position is $38.07 per hour.

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC class 5 driver's license and must provide a satisfactory driver's abstract prior to beginning employment.
