Number of Vacancies:

The City of Victoria's Underground Utilities Section is seeking a Co-op Student to join the Engineering & Public Works team. In this role, you will support the operation, maintenance, repair, and renewal of the City's drinking water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems.

The Section utilizes a variety of software applications, including Cartegraph, Tempest, and Wincan, to schedule, track, and report on work activities. This temporary student position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while supporting core operations, with some crossover into other Public Works Sections such as Street Operations and Surface Infrastructure.

Key duties of the position would include:

  • Drafting and updating computer scripts to:
  • Populate ArcGIS maps with data
  • Convert video files to enable sharing between applications
  • Creating automated business workflows using Power Automate
  • Developing in-app reports within Cartegraph
  • Assisting the Public Works and Cartegraph team with data and asset verification

POSITION FUNCTION

As a student hired under the Co-operative Educational Training Program, you will be given meaningful and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. In this Co-op position you will assist with supernumerary projects and contribute to the overall goals of the work unit.

KEY DUTIES

Under the direct guidance and observation of the supervisor, assist with the on-going enhancement of the City's operations by utilizing existing tools and software platforms.

Participate in the development and improvement of future-focussed projects that align with the department's strategic goals and objectives by providing supernumerary field or office support.

Conduct and document research, analyze and interpret data, prepare summary of findings, draft reports, procedures and/or practices, and present to supervisor for feedback and/or next steps.

Assist with identifying and testing new and/or enhanced tools and processes and collaborate to ensure 'shared learning'.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working level knowledge of current City word processing, spreadsheet, and related specialty software including social media tools.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High School.

Enrolled in a recognized Co-operative Education Program at a Canadian Post-Secondary Institution.

Currently attending full-time education and returning to full-time studies in the subsequent academic year.

In good standing in an Undergraduate Degree Program or Technical School Diploma Program.

Experience:
