Über

The English Instructor – English for Work will deliver workforce-focused English instruction aligned with a program action plan rather than curriculum development. Instruction emphasizes practical, learner-centered approaches that support adult learners in developing English language proficiency alongside essential employability and digital skills. The role focuses on workforce readiness, job search strategies, Canadian workplace culture, and effective communication in employment and business contexts.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instruction & Action-Plan Delivery
• Deliver English instruction aligned with the program action plan and workforce readiness outcomes.
• Focus instruction on essential job skills, current labour market information, job search strategies, and Canadian workplace culture.
• Teach practical workplace communication skills, including resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, and professional interactions.
• Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities with an emphasis on real-world workplace applications.
• Support learners in developing soft skills such as teamwork, professionalism, adaptability, problem-solving, and confidence.

2. Teaching & Learner Engagement
• Facilitate engaging, interactive lessons that encourage active participation and practical skill application.
• Use visual, digital, and audio-visual resources to support diverse learning styles and learner needs.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that builds learner confidence.
• Effectively manage classrooms with learners who have varying English language proficiency and digital skill levels, ensuring all learners remain engaged and supported.

3. Learner Progress Tracking & Reporting
• Conduct pre- and post-assessments to measure language development and workforce readiness outcomes.
• Track learner attendance, participation, and progress throughout the program.
• Document and report learner outcomes in alignment with program and funder requirements.
• Communicate learner progress and outcomes with program staff to support referrals to employment services or additional supports.
4. Program & Administrative Support
• Ensure strict confidentiality and adherence to AHC's policies and ethical guidelines.
• Collaborate with program staff to support learner assessment, class placement, and ongoing learner progress.
• Maintain accurate class attendance records.
• Assist with evaluations, surveys, and other tools to measure client progress and program effectiveness.
• Attend instructor meetings and professional development workshops as required.
• Complete other program-related administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications & Skills


• Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL, TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, or equivalent), or a degree in English with a minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching English to adult learners.
• Demonstrated experience teaching diverse adult learners across varying English proficiency levels, including seniors.
• Experience delivering English instruction in employment-focused, workplace, or business contexts is considered a strong asset.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, CRM systems, and virtual collaboration platforms.
• Knowledge of Canadian workplace culture and employment practices is an asset.
• Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage learners from diverse backgrounds.


• The position involves  teaching one class twice per week, including some preparation time, and the classes will be held in the afternoon.
• Strong facilitation, workshop delivery, and learner coaching skills.
