You will join a dynamic and collegial team of legal professionals in the Legal Department and be involved in a wide range of activities working to advance strategic priorities while ensuring proper risk management. Job Overview

The Manager, External Counsel Management will play a critical leadership role within the Legal Department, overseeing the strategic management of external legal services providers (ELSP's) and supporting the optimal delivery of legal services to the Bank.  Reporting within the Procurement/Legal Operations function, this role will lead a team of professionals and serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate will drive value, quality, and cost effectiveness across Legal's external counsel portfolio while supporting e-billing and broader Legal Operations initiatives.

Accountabilities:

  • Partner with all Legal practice groups to advance strategic priorities and support business objectives

  • Oversee the onboarding of ELSP's and inventory management of TD Legal's global firm roster, ensuring they understand TD's expectations and procedures

  • Work cross-functionally with professionals in Legal, Finance, IT, and others

  • Manage complex initiatives related to legal spend, technology, and operational transformation

  • Lead external Legal Service Provider (ELSP) procurement strategy and pricing initiatives

  • Manage e-billing operations, spend oversight, and matter management process

  • Positively and creatively influence desired departmental change; communicate program case for change; help others anticipate and manage through change

  • Develop, identify, collect, and report on key global performance indicators relating to budget and spend management as well as ELSP diversity, ensuring data quality within the matter and ELSP engagement process

  • Partner with Analytics and Insights team to produce and leverage business intelligence to identify trends, performance gaps and opportunities for improvement and to make decisions that advance strategic priorities

  • Document and automate spend management workflows using various technologies (e.g., RFP process)

  • Lead and develop a team of four professionals

  • Provide general assistance across Legal Operations to assist leadership as and when required

Education, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Experience in a corporate legal department, law firm or relevant operational management role, with expertise in the field of Knowledge Management

  • Strong financial acumen and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and metrics

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Tech-savvy and well-versed in legal enterprise software, tools, and applications including familiarity with matter management and e-billing systems and advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver initiatives on multiple workstreams concurrently using change management practices to facilitate transitions related to technology, processes, and people

  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated team player with a strong interest in learning, creating efficient processes and seamless user experience

  • Strategic decision making, sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills required along with a proven track record in collaborating with diverse stakeholders and influencing change

  • Highest personal & professional integrity & standards

  • Ability to build relationships

  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence change.
