Job Profile
The General Maintenance Worker is the entry level position in the Maintenance Worker series. Staff working in the General Maintenance Worker classification work on a shift schedule, including statutory holidays, consisting of 5 days on, 5 days off, 5 days on, 5 days off, 4 days on, 4 days off; repeat cycle.
As the General Maintenance Worker – Local Sewer,your duties will include:
Assist in performing maintenance and repair of sewer lines and appurtenances.
Assist in flood control operations (makes sure pumps are running, fill with gas, etc.).
Perform maintenance and repair work inside of Wastewater sewers from 6' to 35' in depth.
Perform tasks in accordance with confined space entry requirements.
Assist with major repairs in excavations from 3' to 35' deep.
Assist in cleaning and thawing catch basins/culverts, and flushing sewer lines with pressure machines and vactors.
Assist in performing trench excavation and shoring, and in performing backfill of the excavation.
Assist in performing temporary restoration of pavement surfaces.
Deliver unplanned materials to the work site. Gathers equipment, parts and materials from tool room, stores and suppliers. This includes returning equipment and unused parts and materials to tool, stores and suppliers.
Inspect and report deficiencies in the sewer system and appurtenances.
Operate various equipment and city vehicles as required.
Perform general housekeeping of buildings and grounds.
Perform job site traffic control.
Perform maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment.
Handle hazardous materials, as directed, in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Perform First Aid / CPR, as required.
Follow established safety rules and regulations while performing the duties of the position.
Maintain work related records and reports.
Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
High school graduation / G.E.D. Post-secondary education would be preferred.
Immediate application for "Operator-in-Training" Class Certificate for Class 4 Facility under the Environment Act within the first 30 days of employment.
Successful completion of the Sacramento State College Field Study training program Wastewater Collections Systems Levels 1 and 2 within 18 months of the appointment.
Must obtain Manitoba Class 1 Wastewater Collection Operator Certification within 18 months of the appointment.
Must have, or be able to acquire within 12 months of employment, First Aider Level 1 Certification.
Basic knowledge of City of Winnipeg By-laws, including the Waterworks, Sewer and Streets By-laws is preferred.
Basic knowledge of sewer system facilities, infrastructure, equipment, maintenance repair techniques and procedures is preferred.
Basic knowledge of temporary pavement restoration materials, equipment, techniques and procedures is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to operate portable equipment (e.g. pumps, saws, etc.), as well as hand and power tools.
Applied knowledge of the City of Winnipeg Manual of Temporary Traffic Control is preferred.
Basic knowledge of hazardous material handling, rules and procedures is preferred.
Basic computer skills and knowledge of work related record keeping and reporting forms and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, listen effectively, follow verbal and written instructions.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, contractors and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures applicable to the area of work.
Ability and availability to accept and handle emergency call-out situations after hours.
Ability and willingness to participate and be responsible for safe work planning under the Job Planning Program (JPP).
Conditions Of Employment
The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence, with the ability to acquire a Class 3 Driver's Licence within 18 months of the appointment. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver's notice in force document upon request.
Must successfully complete confined space training.
Must have SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) Certification* or have the ability to acquire within 3 months of the appointment (requires candidate to be clean shaven), in accordance with the CSA Standard.*
Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position (manual labour) in extreme weather conditions. May also be required to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in confined spaces and in hazardous locations.

Position Reports To: Supervisor – Local Wastewater
If and when the temporary position becomes permanent, the successful applicant to this bulletin will automatically receive this position and a further bulletin will not be necessary.
The qualifications for this classification are in accordance with the certification requirements as outlined in the Water and Wastewater Facility Operators Regulations under the Environment Act.
The successful candidates will be required to undergo a medical assessment at the Occupational Health Branch if not previously completed.
The successful candidates will be required to successfully complete tests designed to confirm that they meet the qualifications for the position.
*The Department will arrange for SCBA Certification training for candidates prior to completion of the hiring process.
The Department will provide training in accordance with the skills requirement of the classification. The ability to apply training in the performance of the responsibilities of General Maintenance Worker must be demonstrated and certified by the Department. Employees are required to complete training and certification on all basic skills requirements of the classification and must have the ability to fit him or her for further promotion to the next grade senior.
