Position Summary
The Program Coordinator supports the planning and delivery of Camp Shalom programming and provides daily leadership to counselors and campers. This role helps ensure a safe, inclusive and engaging camp experience that reflects Jewish values and the mission of the Jewish Community Centre. The Program Coordinator works closely with the Camp Director and senior camp leadership to support staff, campers and families, and to ensure programs run smoothly throughout the summer.

Position Summary
The Program Coordinator supports the planning and delivery of Camp Shalom programming and provides daily leadership to counselors and campers. This role helps ensure a safe, inclusive and engaging camp experience that reflects Jewish values and the mission of the Jewish Community Centre. The Program Coordinator works closely with the Camp Director and senior camp leadership to support staff, campers and families, and to ensure programs run smoothly throughout the summer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program delivery and operations 

  • Support the planning and delivery of age-appropriate, engaging programs aligned with Jewish values and the JCC mission.

  • Help create a positive and welcoming environment for campers, families and staff.

  • Support daily camp operations, including schedules, transitions and coverage when staffing ratios require support.

  • Be on site for major outings and field trips as assigned.

  • Maintain accurate camper health, safety and behavioural information and ensure required medical information is available to staff.

  • Support the organization and distribution of medical and safety information for camp groups.

  • Maintain camp social media pages and support camp communications.

  • Attend and help lead mandatory staff training.

Staff leadership and support

  • Assist with planning and facilitating staff training.

  • Support daily camp meetings and clear communication regarding activities, schedules and field trips.

  • Promote positive staff morale and teamwork.

  • Support staff feedback and assist with mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations.

  • Assist with coordinating staff social and team-building activities.

Camper support and programming

  • Be actively involved in daily camp life, including activities, circles, field trips and pick-up.

  • Support counselors to meet the needs of campers.

  • Provide guidance to campers using positive behaviour and problem-solving approaches.

  • Support inclusive programming that reflects diversity and different abilities.

  • Step in to support behaviour management when needed.

  • Lead at least one activity with the Counselor-in-Training group.

Family communication

  • Support open, respectful and confidential communication with families.

  • Share daily program information and updates.

  • Support communication with families regarding incidents, injuries or behavioural concerns.

End-of-summer responsibilities

  • Assist with camp clean-up, inventory and storage of equipment and supplies.

  • Support the organization of program materials, records, evaluations and end-of-season documentation for future use.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a camp, childcare, recreation, school, youth program or volunteer leadership setting.

  • Experience supporting or supervising staff, volunteers or junior counselors (formal or informal leadership experience is acceptable).

  • Ability to support the planning and delivery of activities for children and youth.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to remain organized, flexible and calm in a fast-paced camp environment.

  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, positive behaviour guidance and inclusive programming.

  • Interest in and respect for Jewish values and community-based programming (experience in a Jewish setting is an asset but not required).

  • First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp.

  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check required once hired.
