Looking for an experienced PHP developer to customise an existing marketplace script into a content heavy, SEO driven ecommerce site with ongoing support after launch.
Full job description
- I'm launching a content heavy ecommerce marketplace in the wellness / lifestyle space and need an experienced developer to help turn an existing marketplace script into a fast, SEO friendly, scalable site.
- This is not a simple theme tweak; I'm looking for someone who can take technical ownership of the script and collaborate long term as we grow.
The marketplace script will already be installed and running on our VPS.
- Your role is to customise and extend it so it's truly ready for large scale content (100+ articles at launch, growing over time) and a sizeable product catalogue.
What's already in place
- Marketplace script licence purchased and base installation handled by the vendor.
- VPS hosting configured for the script (LAMP / PHP).
- Initial product catalogue and categories available via vendor feed/import.
- Brand direction and content plan for 100+ editorial articles and guides.
Your core responsibilities
- Review the existing codebase and suggest a technical plan for making it SEO ready (URLs, templates, schema, IA).
- Refine and extend the theme (PHP templates, HTML, CSS, JS) to match the brand design and UX.
- Implement SEO friendly URL structure, meta handling, sitemaps, canonical tags, pagination, and internal linking logic suitable for a large catalogue.
- Add and customise structured data: Product, Offer, Review, FAQ, Breadcrumb, Organization, and LocalBusiness as needed.
Create robust templates for:
- Category "hub" pages (pillar pages)
- Product detail pages
- Blog/articles and FAQ content so we can support a pillar/cluster information architecture.
- Optimise performance and Core Web Vitals (caching, queries, assets, images) for a large catalogue and content library.
- Ensure the script remains easily extendable for future features (advanced search, filters, GEO targeted landing pages, etc.).
Ideal experience
- Strong PHP experience, including customising existing marketplace/ecommerce scripts or CMSs at code level.
Demonstrated experience building SEO driven sites:
- Clean, logical URL structures
- Large category trees
- Sitemaps and schema
- Good technical SEO hygiene.
Comfortable working with third party code: creating child themes/overrides, writing upgrade safe customisations, and documenting your work.
Solid front end skills (HTML, CSS, vanilla JS) for implementing UX and layout changes.
Bonus: experience with marketplaces, dropshipping integrations, or multi language / GEO targeted setups.
How we'll work together
Phase 1 (discovery and plan):
- Audit the existing script and hosting setup.
- Propose a technical plan for templates, IA, schema, and performance improvements.
Phase 2 (implementation for launch):
- Implement agreed theme and template changes.
- Wire up schema, technical SEO, and initial content templates for 100+ articles and the key categories.
Phase 3 (ongoing collaboration):
- Ongoing iterations, new features, and support after launch (hourly or retainer, depending on fit).
- I'm looking for someone interested in a long term relationship rather than a one off install.
Project type, budget, and timeline
Project type: One main build with potential long term collaboration.
Engagement: Prefer hourly to start (with a clear initial scope), open to fixed price milestones for specific phases.
Start: As soon as we find the right person.
Timeline: Initial build and launch over the next 4–8 weeks, then ongoing work as we scale.
What to include in your proposal
Please include:
- 2–3 links to ecommerce or marketplace projects where you:
- Customised an existing script/CMS at code level, and
- Implemented technical SEO features (URLs, schema, performance, etc.).
- A short note on your approach to working with pre built marketplace scripts that need heavy SEO and content customisation.
- Your typical availability (hours per week, timezone) and preferred way of working (tools, communication).
Contract duration of 1 to 3 months. with 40 hours per week.
