Job Description This position requires a hybrid work schedule with a commitment to report to the Austin Technical Center in Austin, TX or the GM Global Tech Center in Michigan, MI at least three times per week, although the frequency may vary based on business needs. The Role As a Lead Data Engineer, you will be at the forefront of designing, building, and optimizing robust data assets and pipelines to support our Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics initiatives. This position is a critical component of the Intelligent Manufacturing organization within Data Engineering Software, where you will develop innovative, high-quality, scalable solutions that align with both functional and non-functional business requirements. You will play a vital role in a variety of projects involving databases, streaming technologies, CI/CD processes, and cloud platforms. The Intelligent Manufacturing teams are dedicated to conceptualizing, experimenting, and delivering transformative data solutions for General Motors Manufacturing and its partners. Collaborating closely with both business and IT teams, you will help create real-time solutions that leverage plant floor data to enhance decision-making, improve plant asset maintenance, boost safety, and elevate operational performance, including Vehicle Build Data. This senior-level role merges advanced data engineering expertise with contemporary software engineering practices. You will lead the development of scalable and maintainable data-driven solutions, crafting high-quality, tested, and production-ready code to meet customer expectations while minimizing the need for rework. Your work will take place in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting where you will tackle complex problems, contribute to architectural discussions, and influence solutions that enhance performance, scalability, and maintainability, all in line with business priorities. What You'll Do Assemble extensive, intricate data sets that satisfy both functional and non-functional business requirements.
Identify, design, and implement process improvements, inclusive of automation, data delivery optimization, and scalable infrastructure redesign.
Lead the development of data-driven solutions using various languages, tools, and technologies.
Contribute to architectural discussions and strategic technology adoption.
Build and optimize highly scalable data pipelines with complex transformations and efficient coding practices.
Design and develop integrations from diverse source systems, including files, database extracts, and APIs.
Design and implement solutions for data delivery adhering to SLA requirements.
Collaborate with operations teams to address and resolve production issues related to the data platform.
Utilize best practices, including Agile methodologies and continuous deployment, in your work.
Develop tools and automation to streamline deployments and enhance production monitoring processes.
Partner with business and technology colleagues, providing guidance, best practices, and coaching.
Mentor peers and junior engineers while informing colleagues about emerging industry trends and technologies.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
7+ years of data engineering experience, with strong proficiency in Python or Scala, SQL, and both relational and non-relational data storage (ETL frameworks, big data processing, NoSQL).
3+ years of experience in distributed data processing (e.g., Spark) and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
Proficiency in data streaming within Kubernetes and with Kafka.
Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure; AWS or GCP also considered.
A solid understanding of CI/CD principles and tools.
Familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, HBase, Object Storage (e.g., ADLS/S3), and Event Queues.
Strong grasp of performance optimization techniques including partitioning, clustering, and caching.
Proficiency with SQL, key-value stores, and document stores.
Familiarity with data architecture and modeling concepts to facilitate efficient data consumption.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and disciplines.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications) Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, or data quality/observability.
Familiarity with schema design and data contracts.
Experience managing various file formats (e.g., video, audio, image).
Experience with platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, or similar.
This position may be eligible for relocation benefits. Compensation: The anticipated base salary for this role is between $153,000 and $227,000, with final compensation based on relevant factors.
