As a Senior Network Engineer within our Backbone Engineering team, you will play a vital role in our Infrastructure Strategy and Data Center Operations. This global team is focused on delivering and sustaining technology infrastructure across the Salesforce Global Network, meeting the demands of significant business growth. You will collaborate with field teams, vendor sources, Global Network Operations, and application owners to develop innovative solutions in a dynamic environment. We are looking for enthusiastic technologists dedicated to operational excellence through standards, processes, and automation. The Backbone Engineering team specializes in network capacity and connectivity strategies, including peering relationships, capacity planning, and backbone routing architecture. Our engineering approach is guided by customer success and trust, ensuring a seamless experience for customers accessing Salesforce applications and data. Key Responsibilities: Collaborate with vendor sourcing teams to optimize resources. Develop and maintain vendor capacity metrics for effective management. Project manage new capacity installations across various teams. Update network and data stores to accommodate capacity modifications. Offer feedback and implement new network designs in partnership with multiple teams. Automate network configurations utilizing Python and Ansible. Support customer engagement teams in troubleshooting connectivity issues. Manage BGP peering relationships and design peering networks. Oversee backbone router migrations and decommissioning processes. Document and collaboratively approve network design life cycles. Maintain Network Data Standards of Truth for consistency. Required Experience and Skills: 7+ years of experience in production network environments. Proven project management skills. Experience working with telecommunications vendors. Familiarity with Cisco and Juniper carrier-class routers. Experience with Cisco Nexus-based switches. Knowledge of BGP and IS-IS routing protocols. Understanding of WDM technologies. Strong programming skills in Python. Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems. Experience developing network automation tools such as Ansible. Proficiency with Git or similar version control systems. Ability to manage multiple projects independently. Strong understanding of AI, machine learning, and LLMs. A relevant technical degree is required. Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing co-located infrastructure. Familiarity with DWDM platforms (preferably Ciena and Cisco DCI). Experience with MACSec encryption. Expertise in network troubleshooting and monitoring. Hands-on experience with production hardware life-cycle management. Exposure to Puppet, Terraform, Containers, and/or Kubernetes. Understanding of CI/CD principles. Experience with backbone router migration strategies. Experience with global, web-scale IP address allocations. Solid knowledge of transit and peering spaces. Ability to utilize public AI chatbots and coding assistance tools. Familiarity with the Salesforce core application. At Salesforce, you'll unlock your potential.
