Responsibilities The FAA Voice Switch and Recorder (VS&R) Program Office plays a pivotal role in managing voice communications and legal recording systems essential for Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations within the FAA's National Airspace System (NAS). It oversees the procurement of modern Internet Protocol (IP) ATC Voice Communications Systems (VCSs), which involves a comprehensive range of activities including requirements development, procurement, verification, validation, testing, implementation, and deployment. The VS&R Program Office also handles the full life cycle sustainment and logistics of existing legacy ATC VCSs used throughout the NAS. As a Network Systems Administrator, you will be hands-on in supporting the FAA Test and Evaluation Lead and Technical Team at the William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace. Your expertise will help the FAA achieve critical technical milestones related to the verification, validation, testing, and implementation of modern IP-VCSs and Air-to-Ground Protocol Converters (APCs). You will be responsible for planning, designing, installing, configuring, and maintaining laboratory IP networks and Linux systems. This includes virtual machine management and monitoring of equipment utilizing industry-standard open-source software solutions. Your role will also involve software configuration management and maintaining software issue tracking repositories. To succeed in this position, you must understand both current and emerging technologies and apply innovative solutions to solve complex challenges. Required Qualifications The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Information System Security, Software Engineering, or a related field along with 6-17 years of relevant hands-on experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential: Experience in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining laboratory IP networks with multiple VLANs, subnets, domains (management and data planes), and domain protection techniques (e.g., access control list enforcement) using enterprise-grade network switches and routers. Proficient in configuring managed routers and switches. Experience in designing and deploying high availability networks, inclusive of high availability protocol integration. Expertise in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining laboratory Linux systems, encompassing virtual machine management and network monitoring solutions, using industry-standard open-source software. Understanding of operating system architecture and configuration, including directory structure, device files, and network settings. Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, Docker, Jenkins, etc. Experience in managing software tracking and repository solutions. Strong skills in software configuration management to ensure reliable tracking and reproducibility of infrastructure configurations. Knowledge of systems development lifecycles. Familiarity with Information System Security practices. Ability to prepare briefings that effectively communicate and validate platform/infrastructure features. Capacity to work independently, collaboratively, and under direction with cross-functional teams, including FAA staff, vendors, and contractors in a dynamic environment. Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing technical requirements. Willingness to work both remotely and onsite at the William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace, as well as participate in on-call rotation and after-hours support when necessary. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance (US citizenship or green card holder residing in the US for at least three years). Desired Qualifications The following qualifications will be beneficial: Familiarity with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Understanding of the FAA National Airspace System (NAS). Experience with systems requirements and design. Experience in managing and organizing test lab configuration activities. Familiarity with simulation environments, testbeds, or real-time data feeds for ATC systems. Ability to collect, analyze data, and communicate technical information effectively. Experience with Codebeamer, a collaborative Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tool for testing. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
