Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading and developing the maintenance team to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. This position focuses on building technical capability across the team through coaching, training, and strategic shift planning, while also providing overall mechanical and electrical support to production in processing, bottling, plastics, and facilities areas.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who prioritizes people development, team balance, and knowledge transfer. They will actively assess technician skill levels, design and implement training plans, and create shift pairings that promote mentorship between stronger and developing team members.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee maintenance of highly automated manufacturing equipment and the overall maintenance department to ensure consistent performance and reliability.
Evaluate individual technician strengths and skill gaps; develop tailored training and development plans to strengthen the overall team.
Strategically pair technicians with complementary skill sets to promote mentorship, growth, and balanced capability across all shifts.
Ensure adequate shift coverage for holidays, absences, and overtime by planning schedules proactively and, when required, personally providing shift coverage.
Partner with the Maintenance Manager to implement succession planning initiatives within the department to strengthen long-term maintenance capability.
Build a positive and accountable team culture that emphasizes communication, collaboration, and mutual support.
Conduct regular one-on-one check-ins and performance conversations to foster engagement and identify development opportunities.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and implement timely, innovative solutions to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency.
Modify, repair, install, maintain, improve, and troubleshoot a variety of machinery, equipment, and facilities systems, applying principles of mechanics, fitting, plumbing, basic welding, metal fabrication, machining, and analytical problem-solving.
Ensure the effective operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on all production and support equipment, following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, SOPs, and work orders.
Maintain equipment, parts, and supply inventories by monitoring stock levels, anticipating requirements, placing and expediting orders, and verifying receipts.
Lead the maintenance team in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Promptly respond to equipment-related issues with a customer-oriented and solution-focused approach.
Assist with equipment changeovers and verify operational readiness of required equipment.
Provide coverage for absent shift mechanics when required to maintain continuity of operations.
Maintain a visible presence on the production floor (approximately 50%), monitoring equipment and employees for safety, performance, and quality risks.
Filter, generate, and assign work orders to maintenance staff through the scheduler; monitor work order completion to ensure 100% compliance.
Track and analyze hourly equipment performance KPIs to ensure adherence to production plans.
Manage repair and maintenance (R&M) costs per unit, ensuring effective cost control.
Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly meetings with the maintenance team and cross-functional departments to align on priorities and performance.
Routinely inspect production lines and facility areas to identify needs, prioritize work, and drive continuous improvement.
Oversee safety activities within the maintenance department, ensuring compliance with company policies, legislative requirements, and best practices.
Recommend changes to working conditions, equipment usage, and procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness within the department.
Lead, train, coach, and evaluate team members with a focus on technical skill development, mentorship, and team balance across shifts.
Partner with the Maintenance Manager to address employee relations matters, including performance management, discipline, and recruitment.
Organize, monitor, and support OEM and contracted service groups during major overhauls, installations, and repairs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Minimum 5 years of mechanical experience in a high-speed packaging and/or manufacturing environment (food industry experience highly preferred).
Proven ability to develop and mentor technical teams, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.
Demonstrated experience with shift planning and team coverage management.
Strong interpersonal and leadership presence with the ability to influence and motivate a diverse technical workforce.
Strong electrical and PLC knowledge with proven troubleshooting abilities.
Effective leadership skills with the ability to coach, motivate, and develop team members.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Solid knowledge of preventive maintenance programs (CMMS) and reliability practices.
Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
In-depth knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and maintenance management systems.
Customer-focused approach with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Positive, proactive attitude and ability to collaborate across departments.
Flexibility to work as required, including participation in on-call rotation and responding to after-hours emergencies.
Pay Rate:
$90-100K/year to start
