Role Definition: BIM 3D/4D/5D Manager for Mining Projects

Role Purpose

To develop, manage, and integrate Building Information Models (3D, 4D, and 5D) that support engineering design, construction planning, cost forecasting, and lifecycle management for mining projects. This role ensures digital models accurately represent mine infrastructure, schedules, and cost data to improve decision‑making, reduce risk, and enhance project execution.

Core Responsibilities

3D BIM (Geometric & Spatial Modeling)

  • Create and manage detailed 3D models of mine infrastructure (surface and underground).
  • Integrate geological, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, and structural data into a unified model.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams to ensure model accuracy and clash-free design.
  • Maintain model standards, naming conventions, and data structures.

4D BIM (Schedule Integration)

  • Link the 3D model to the project schedule (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
  • Simulate construction sequences for shafts, declines, processing plants, tailings, utilities, etc.
  • Identify schedule risks, sequencing conflicts, and constructability issues.
  • Produce visual construction phasing animations for stakeholder communication.

5D BIM (Cost Integration)

  • Connect model elements to cost codes, quantities, and estimating databases.
  • Automate quantity take-offs (QTO) for mine infrastructure and equipment.
  • Support cost forecasting, budget tracking, and scenario analysis.
  • Provide cost-loaded 4D simulations to evaluate schedule–cost impacts.

Required Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in BIM platforms (Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks, Bentley, Deswik CAD, or similar).
  • Understanding of mining engineering workflows and infrastructure design.
  • Experience with scheduling tools (Primavera, MS Project).
  • Knowledge of cost estimating systems and quantity measurement standards.
  • Ability to manage large datasets and model coordination environments (e.g., BIM 360, ProjectWise).

Domain Knowledge

  • Mining project lifecycle: exploration → design → construction → operations.
  • Underground and surface mine infrastructure (shafts, declines, conveyors, ventilation, processing).
  • Construction methodologies specific to mining.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication for coordinating engineers, planners, and contractors.
  • Ability to translate complex model data into clear insights for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving mindset for constructability and sequencing challenges.
