Job Description: Business Analyst – Capital Markets Controllership
Intermediate Level
Location: Toronto, ON
Contract Length: 4 months (with strong possibility of extension and full‑time conversion)
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 2–3 days per week onsite
Role Overview
The Business Analyst plays a key role within the Capital Markets Controllership group, responsible for financial reporting, analytics, month/quarter/year‑end close support, and governance activities. This role requires strong analytical capabilities, advanced reporting skills, and the ability to collaborate with finance, operations, and business stakeholders. The position supports strategic initiatives, improves financial processes, and ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
Consolidate, analyze, and report on financial performance for period-end closing (monthly, quarterly, yearly).
Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, financial statements, and reporting packages in compliance with accounting standards.
Analyze financial results to identify variances, trends, and provide meaningful insights and recommendations.
Data, Analytics & Dashboarding
Gather, format, and manage data for regular and ad-hoc financial reports.
Develop, maintain, and automate Power BI dashboards to support decision-making.
Support improvements in reporting efficiency using Microsoft 365 tools, including Copilot prompting.
Governance, Controls & Audits
Support SOX, internal, and external audits by providing required documentation and resolving queries.
Review supporting documentation and escalate potential issues where necessary.
Ensure adherence to financial governance frameworks and accounting policies.
Strategic Projects & Process Improvements
Participate in strategic initiatives, including tracking milestones, KPIs, and project deliverables.
Identify opportunities to streamline, align, or enhance finance and operational processes.
Serve as a point of escalation for policy exceptions and operational issues.
Stakeholder Partnership
Build strong working relationships with finance, accounting, capital markets, and operational teams.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve business objectives.
Communicate financial results, insights, and recommendations clearly to stakeholders.
General Responsibilities
Execute routine tasks and service requests within established SLAs.
Organize work and documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and audit readiness.
Apply judgment to solve problems and work independently on complex or unique tasks.
Take on additional responsibilities as required.
Must‑Have Qualifications
3–5 years of hands‑on experience with Power BI, including dashboard development and system implementations.
Familiarity with Microsoft Copilot and strong prompting skills.
Advanced Excel proficiency (PivotTables, Power Query, formulas, data modeling).
Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Collaboration and stakeholder‑management skills.
Ability to make clear, data-driven decisions.
Nice‑to‑Have Experience
Background in Wealth Management or Capital Markets.
Prior team lead or managerial experience.
Previous experience in banking or financial services.
Understanding of audit, SOX compliance, and financial governance frameworks.
Exposure to ERP/GL systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working with financial data in a fast‑paced environment. They excel at translating financial insights into actionable recommendations and are strong collaborators who can work independently on complex tasks. Power BI mastery and comfort with emerging AI tools (e.g., Copilot) are essential.
