About
the Role

The Recreation Aide reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/ Recreation
Manager or designate. This role assists in planning, implementing and
evaluating activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons
served, while maintaining the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated
with respect and dignity.

Responsibilities

Include but not limited to;

  1. Be
    an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional
    relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and
    purpose.  
  2. Assists
    in the development of recreation and leisure services including program
    research development, implementation and evaluation.
  3. Promotes,
    publicizes and carries out established recreation programs such as outings,
    exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, games.
  4. Assists
    in the completion and posting of monthly calendars and newsletters outlining
    programs and services available to residents/tenants and families.
  5. Coordinates
    external groups to provide in-house programs.
  6. Assists
    residents and provide portering to and from programs as required
  7. Observes, documents and reports
    any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  8. Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
    • accident prevention, 
    • knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, 
    • the
      safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary,
      and
    • Utilizing
      infection control procedures
  1. Maintains appropriate
    documentation as per policy and procedures, confidentiality and security.
  2. Actively participates in
    orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and
    educational in-services.
  3. Assists
    in the maintenance of statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro,
    Point Click Care, etc. 
  4. Assists with orientation of new
    residents and encourages residents to participate or volunteer in their own
    community.
  5. Provides guidance, assistance and
    support to volunteers, while assists in the evaluation of volunteers.
  6. Performs
    other related duties as required.

Qualifications
& Skills:

  1. Grade
    12 Education
  2. A two-year
    Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at a minimum a Health Care Aide with a
    Recreation/Activity Certificate.
  3. Previous
    experience in a senior's focused environment an asset.
  4. Dementia
    course an asset.
  5. Valid First Aid Level 1
    Certification.
  6. Serving It Right Certificate.
  7. Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset 
  8. Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License. 
  9. All successful applicants must
    pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial
    guidelines.
  10. Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment. 
  11. Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions. 
  12. Good interpersonal and
    organizational skills.
  13. Basic
    computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
