FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER

Position Purpose and Objectives

The Field Service Engineer at Thordon Bearings, reporting to the Engineering Manager, will be responsible for preparing technically sound solutions to support both internal and external customers and for taking the lead on projects when required.

The Field Services Engineer will have a strong background in the marine industry and is ideal for a technically skilled, customer-focused professional who thrives in dynamic environments and can confidently troubleshoot complex issues on board marine vessels. They will serve as a key technical representative for Thordon, ensuring that customer needs are met quickly, professionally, and with the highest level of expertise.

This position will require international travel (up to 20% of the time). Travel may be on short notice in some cases.

Essential Job Functions

  • Lead and manage customer issues and apply project management methodologies when required
  • Support the GSS department with technical advice and direction when needed
  • Ensure technically sound information and solutions are provided in a manner that complies with required engineering standards, assesses risk and meets the expectations of internal and external clients
  • Provide engineering support to other departments as required
  • Provide on-site and remote technical support for marine systems, equipment, and installations
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and operational issues independently
  • Respond promptly and professionally to customer inquiries, ensuring sensitive or urgent vessel-related issues are handled with care and efficiency
  • Participate in field service visits and maintenance activities on marine vessels
  • Manage multiple service projects simultaneously, ensuring deliverables are met
  • Prepare detailed service reports and recommendations following field assignments
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and customer support teams to resolve technical challenges
  • Maintain strong customer relationships through clear communication and professionalism
  • Travel internationally to support customer vessels, installations, and service needs

Requirements

  • Computer literate – Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Project
  • Strong organizing ability

  • Analytical ability to understand and provide solutions to complex problems

  • Ability to work longer hours while travelling and in the office

  • Must be able to travel and in some cases, on short notice

  • Knowledge of ships, shipyards and industrial operations
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Communicate clearly, in English

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed Professional Engineer (PEng) or is eligible to obtain, is preferred.

A Degree in Marine Engineering, or a related field is required

Project Management experience or qualifications (PMP) is preferred

A minimum of 10 years' experience in the Marine or related industry is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility

Oversee department employees as required. Potentially oversee suppliers/partners for special projects.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, crouch, kneel, climb, see, talk, and hear.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be subjected to outdoor conditions in various locations worldwide (including cold, hot, and high-humidity conditions). In addition, noise and other industrial hazards may be present during client visits. The noise level in the fieldwork environment is usually moderate but unpredictable. Some areas can be confined spaces, and others can require scaffolding.
