Introduction
Brunel is currently partnered with a leading mining organization on Project Aguila, a major mining and metallurgical process facilities project. We are seeking an experienced Project Engineering Manager to provide leadership across detailed engineering and engineering execution phases, initially based in the Calgary engineering office and transitioning to the project site in Arizona.
Reporting directly to the Project Director, with a functional reporting line to the Director of Engineering Management, this role will be accountable for engineering delivery associated with a specified technology package, from early project definition through procurement, construction, and commissioning support.
This is a senior‑level contract role suited for an engineering leader with extensive EPCM experience on large, complex industrial and mining projects.
Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Execution
Lead and manage detailed engineering and engineering execution activities for the assigned technology package.
Review and guide the development of Engineering Work Packages (EWPs), ensuring scope definition, sequencing, and time‑phased execution align with overall project objectives.
Establish achievable engineering schedules and monitor progress against master, look‑ahead, and detailed schedules.
Monitor engineering performance, verifying systems and controls for tracking, reporting, and forecasting engineering deliverables.
Scope, Cost, Schedule & Quality Control
Maintain accountability for scope, cost, schedule, safety, and quality as influenced by engineering execution.
Lead the evaluation, management, and approval of engineering changes proposed by the technology provider, minimizing impacts to cost and schedule.
Manage re‑forecasting of contractor staffing requirements using actual progress, remaining work, and estimates to complete.
Provide engineering input to monthly project reporting, highlighting progress, risks, issues, and mitigation actions.
Interface & Stakeholder Management
Interface closely with site‑based leadership, health and safety personnel, and internal project teams to ensure engineering execution meets operational and environmental expectations.
Participate in design reviews and execution planning sessions to support logical, constructible, and integrated schedule development.
Coordinate early with Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning teams to incorporate constructability, operability, and commissioning requirements into the design.
Quality Assurance, Risk & Compliance
Ensure a comprehensive QA/QC framework is implemented to monitor the quality of all engineering deliverables.
Ensure engineering systems and the 3D intelligent design environment are properly established and utilized by engineering contractors.
Coordinate engineering risk assessments, HAZOPs, and technical reviews, ensuring all identified risks are addressed.
Coordinate quality audits and verification activities to ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Instigate corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
Team Leadership & Development
Supervise engineering staff and contractors, ensuring performance aligns with project requirements.
Regularly assess the structure and capability of the engineering team to meet short‑ and long‑term project objectives.
Provide technical leadership and act as a subject matter expert on engineering management matters.
Promote collaboration, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement across engineering teams.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in Project and Engineering Management on large industrial or mining projects with a value exceeding USD/CAD $500 million.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline with 15+ years of experience in engineering and project management practices.
OR Master's degree in Engineering or related field with 12+ years of experience.
Extensive knowledge of:
Engineering execution and multi‑discipline coordination
Project controls, contract administration, procurement, expediting, and logistics
Engineering planning, progress measurement, and performance control strategies
Strong understanding of drawing production, document control systems, and engineering workflows.
Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and organize complex engineering activities at a senior level.
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior leadership, contractors, and client representatives.
Willingness to travel, work internationally, and relocate to site as required.
Proficient in business and engineering software tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior EPCM experience, including design office management.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with a recognized governing authority.
