Make your mark while you grow your career Canadian Natural has an exciting opportunity for a highly detail oriented and organized environmental professional to provide stewardship and regulatory guidance on regulatory obligations related to aquatics. In this role, you will implement the aquatics monitoring programs for natural and constructed waterbodies at our Horizon Oil Sands site and support other environmental initiatives by providing regulatory direction for ongoing operational and development activities. 

You will use your strong communication skills to support and advise mine operations and project construction on operational controls to maintain regulatory requirements, generate technical reporting documents, and interface with regulatory authorities.  Initiative and flexibility are required as this role consists of approximately 60% office and 40% field work.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Horizon Oil Sands site
  • Shift schedule:  4 x 3, 10-hour shifts (Monday - Thursday)

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Safely perform aquatic and fish habitat assessments within natural and constructed aquatic ecosystems using various equipment including boats, ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, and sampling tools
  • Lead environmental teams, supervise students, and mentor junior staff in performing onsite water quality monitoring, fish inventories and salvages, watercourse crossing inspections, wetland development and monitoring, and other services as needed
  • Conduct environmental monitoring and provide aquatic expertise for various development projects, with emphasis on protecting fish and fish habitat
    • Support other biophysical field assessments including, but not limited to, those related to wetlands, wildlife, vegetation, and soils
  • Occasionally support other Environment scopes and on call duties during team members absences
  • Analyze and interpret field data and communicate findings clearly and concisely
  • Prepare technical reports and regulatory applications to support provincial and federal requirements
    • Effectively communicate and liaise with regulators, stakeholders, contractors, and internal personnel to provide project updates and present recommendations

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field; Must have a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant professional experience
  • Preference will be given to applicants to are Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialists (QAES) and to those who hold a professional designation (e.g., P.Biol.)
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote locations and be physically capable and competent to work in a variety of environmental conditions
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental policies and regulations in Alberta and Canada, especially those pertaining to aquatics and fisheries
  • Proficiency in technical writing, problem-solving, and communication
