CAREER OPPORTUNITY

We are currently seeking Transit Special Constables who are sworn peace officers empowered to enforce a range of federal and provincial statutes in response to offences occurring on any TTC property or vehicle. A minimum bi-weekly schedule of 80 hours is required for this role. Candidates must be able to work on a variety of work schedules involving various rotating shifts in a 24/7 operational environment at the assigned location.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Support public safety by responding to various incidents, including medical emergencies and law enforcement matters
  •  Conduct investigations, patrol assigned areas, and contribute to crime prevention efforts
  •  Prepare incident reports, collect evidence, and assist in presenting cases for prosecution
  •  Carry out duties as a sworn Special Constable and Peace Officer, representing the TTC in alignment with applicable laws, by-laws, contracts, and policies
  •  Foster a positive experience for TTC customers and staff through respectful and effective communication
  •  Collaborate with regional police services, other law enforcement agencies, and court services
  •  Safely transport individuals in custody to designated facilities as directed by Toronto Police Service
  •  Work rotating shifts in a 24/7 operational environment, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
  •  Uphold respect, dignity, and accessibility in all interactions, ensuring compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of experience in transit security or equivalent experience involving public interaction and enforcement procedures
  • Experience working equitably with diverse community groups including Indigenous, Black and racialized communities, people with disabilities, newcomer communities, low-income, multi-lingual groups, 2SLGBTQ+ and other prioritized communities is considered an asset
  • Experience in customer service, hospitality, healthcare, or social services, with a focus on engaging diverse and vulnerable communities
  • Comprehensive knowledge in de-escalation strategies and understanding of mental illness and/or addictions and complex medical issues are considered an asset
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills under pressure
  • Organizational skills to manage planned and unplanned duties such as patrols, investigations, and emergency response
  • Completion of the Transit Special Constable recruitment process, including assessments and background checks
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Special Constable status under applicable agreements
  • A general understanding of security or law-enforcement operations, along with the responsibilities of a Special Constable with Peace Officer authority. This includes familiarity with key legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Trespass to Property Act, Provincial Offences Act, Liquor Licence Act, , MFIPPA, and other relevant Federal and Provincial statutes, as well as Transit By-laws.
  • An Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate is accepted but not required
ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

  • Language Proficiency: Proficient in English (oral, reading, and writing) at the time of hire.
  • Police Record Check: Completion of a Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Check through your local Police Services detachment. Third-party background checks are not accepted · Driver's License Requirement: Valid Ontario Class G driver's license (or provincial equivalent) in good standing 
  • 3 year drivers abstract Status must show no more than 3 demerit points
  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent (see Educational requirements here)

Meet below eligibility requirements:

  • Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • At least 18 years of age
  • No criminal convictions without a granted pardon. 
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-Level C certification
  • Physical Readiness: Participation in physical fitness testing with Transit Special Constable team and successful completion of the Ontario Police Fitness PIN test
  • Must learn, meet and maintain Transit Special Constable Services standard in the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, baton and the use of force continuum
  • Additional Assessments: Candidates will also be required to undergo other investigations/checks: Fingerprinting, Driver's license history review, Credit check, Reference check, MMPI written assessment, interview with a psychologist
