Opportunity Summary
The Summer Engineering Student will work under the guidance of the Plant Engineer and Leadership Team to gain practical experience in power plant operations and engineering. This role provides exposure to equipment reliability, efficiency monitoring, project development and execution requirements to support a dynamic industrial environment. The student will assist in engineering tasks, documentation, and inspections while learning applicable codes and standards.
This is a temporary position from May – Aug 2026, full-time, On-Site position
Primary Functions
- Participate and support the site safety management program by adhering to all safety procedures.
- Assist with routine plant inspections and help identify potential hazards.
- Support documentation updates, including site drawings and engineering records.
- Review technical data for equipment performance and reliability analysis.
- Participate in safety meetings and promote safe work practices.
- Assist with organization and entry of technical asset information and documentation into Plant CMMS (Maximo) and SharePoint for record-keeping.
- Assist in preparing reports and presentations for internal use.
- Support Management of Change (MOC) work and Capital Projects by coordinating with vendors, conducting field reviews and gathering technical information.
- Learn and apply applicable codes and standards (CSA, ASME, ABSA) under supervision.
- Participate in investigations of plant issues and assist in developing corrective actions.
- Perform any other assigned duties as needed.
Working Relationships
The Summer Engineering Student reports to the Engineering & Environmental Manager and coordinates work activity with the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor(s), and Plant Administrator. Interfaces with contractor(s) and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel for necessary support and coordination.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Industrial plant environment. Physical requirements include the ability to reach, climb, walk, and stoop throughout the workday, as well as the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 25 kg. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. Work outdoors during inclement weather may be required.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a physical examination and Alcohol and Drug screening.
Qualifications
We are accepting applications from students who are currently enrolled in a Canadian university in Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline
- Strong interest in power generation and industrial operations.
- Basic understanding of engineering principles and safety practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience in industrial facility operations, engineering, maintenance and/or construction would be beneficial
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Learning Outcomes
- Exposure to plant engineering practices and application of industrial codes in a new Combined Cycle Power Plant.
- Hands-on experience with equipment reliability, operation and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of project coordination responsibilities and working in multi-disciplinary team within a power generation facility.
