Position: Health & Safety Coordinator
Position Overview
The Health & Safety Coordinator works collaboratively with the Toronto Processing Facility and the New Jersey and California Health & Safety Coordinators to ensure that health and safety standards and procedures are met and aligned with internal guidelines and policies. Actively advise, guide and support the Toronto Processing Facility to implement internal Health and Safety measures and comply with Ontario Occupation Safety and Health Act regulations. Reporting to the Health, Safety, Security & Continuous Improvement Manager, the Health & Safety Coordinator modifies, maintains and communicates the existing Health and Safety Program to all parties. Up to 80% of the role is performed on the production floor actively coaching employees, supervisors and contractors towards a more safety conscious mindset by identifying and mitigating workplace hazards and reinforcing safety is everyone's responsibility. Reports any safety hazards and unsafe work practices and develops corrective action plans. Influences and emulates behavior towards a proactive rather than reactive safety culture.
Major Responsibilities
- Health and Safety Compliance: Is responsible for maintaining a thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety to comply with appropriate regulations, governing bodies and internal health and safety programs with the aim to make the workplace as safe as possible.
- Documentation: Creates, modifies, and maintains Health and Safety procedures and program documentation with traceability for version control, keeping workers and Management informed of the program, process, changes and new requirements. Manages all onsite contractor processes in accordance with requirements.
- Inspections: Performs all Health and Safety inspections on a regular basis, making recommendations for continuous improvement. Researches materials, equipment or supplies to remediate potential hazards in a proactive way. Reports anomalies immediately to site Management and the health and safety department.
- Investigations: Investigates any incidents, accidents or near misses, documents root cause, recommends corrective action, and coaches workers and Management on safety first approach.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials: Partners with the Site Management to maintain up to date hazardous materials, awareness and training and Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS) compliance, under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
- Certifications: Ensures all certification, inspection, servicing requirements are maintained in accordance with current legislation, including fire certification and compliance, seeks quotations as required and makes recommendations to the site management team.
- Internal Safety Program Audit: Implements and conducts regular internal audits and recommends improvements to comply with all Health & Safety regulations.
- Emergency Response: Creates and updates Fire Safety Plan, Emergency Response Plan, organizes and evaluates regular evacuation drills and recommends corrective action for improvements, maintains first aid action plan and communications.
- Risk Assessment: Assists with evaluating existing Risk Assessment and Control Matrix, makes recommendations for improvements and communicates to all parties.
- Ergonomics: Understands ergonomics and can assess risks, recommend alternative work methods, liaise with external parties to implement equipment or revised processes that eliminate or reduce bodily strain and injuries. Coach employees on ergonomics as needed.
- Reporting: Regularly reports health and safety stats to Health, Safety, Security & Continuous Improvement Manager for inclusion in Period End Reports.
- Training: Creates and conducts regular Safety Talks, new hire and contractor safety awareness training and sign off, and tracks and records all training in database/Alchemy Training System. Recommends and registers external safety training courses for key personnel and tracks completion and renewal dates. Provides support for programs such as LOTO, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, etc.
- Customer Service: Provides support that is friendly, valued, knowledgeable, and timely. Models behaviors that support the Health and Safety policy.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee: Participates as an active certified member of the JHSC meetings, takes, posts and distributes the minutes, and educates and coaches the committee members to understand and fulfill their responsibilities.
- Other Duties: Performs other related duties as assigned, and initiates recommendations to further enhance the company's recognition as a top employer.
Key Success Measures
Health & Safety Coordinator – Afternoon Shift
The goal of the afternoon health and safety coordinator is to establish a consistent, visible, and proactive health and safety presence during the second shift. This role strengthens the safety culture by increasing near miss awareness, supporting real time mitigation, and serving as a bridge between management and production associates during the afternoon and evening hours.
The coordinator additionally acts as the on-scene incident commander and designated first aid responder during emergencies, strengthens Greenstone's ability to respond to outside authorities.
Incident Commander Duties
- Immediate scene assessment
- Coordinated emergency response
- Initiating evacuation or shelter in place procedures
- Hazard isolation
- Communicating with plant leadership, contractors and (if needed) emergency services to provide clear and accurate information
- Direct oversight during the incident
- These responsibilities are critical on the afternoon shift where:
- Equipment failures occur later in the day
- Supervisors often seek urgent guidance
Daily, Weekly & Monthly Responsibilities
- Visible floor presence, behavioral observations and ergonomic corrections
- Real-time response to equipment breakdowns, hazards and emergency events
- Deployment of alchemy / SOP training during downtime
- Incident response and investigation
- Addressing employees' safety concerns and complaints
- Shift continuity – correcting hazards passed on from morning operations
- PPE distribution and coaching
- Oversight of contactors performing late day repairs or emergency work
- Oversight of Sanitation start up
- Establish a PM shift safety committee
- Critical Risk Control Checks
- Monthly Warehouse inspections and MHE/Forklift activities oversight
- Support new machinery integration and change management
- Support Annual requirements (audiometric testing, drill coordination, extinguisher inspections and OSHA requirements)
Safety Trainer Responsibilities
Delivering both scheduled and on-demand safety sessions, including topics such as:
- LOTO
- Machine guarding
- Machine specific SOPs
- Toolbox Talks
- Monthly Alchemy Trainings
- Competency verification – conducting hands-on competency checks for critical tasks
- Verifying that employees understand SOPs, safe work practices and emergency procedures
- Providing retraining or targeted coaching for employees who demonstrate gaps in knowledge or safe-work execution
New Employee Training & Orientation
- Delivering afternoon shift onboarding training for new hires and temporary associates
- Communicating progress to HR and morning H&S team to guarantee continuity
Change Management Training
- New procedures
- Revised SOPs
- Updated safety controls
- Mechanical or automation changes
Continuous Improvement
- Reviewing incident trends and near misses to adjust training content proactively
- Working with supervisors to develop or refine practical shift‑specific training modules
- Ensuring training reflects real operational needs for the afternoon shift
- Facilitate with new machine implementation
Qualifications & Considerations for the Position
- Post-secondary education (Diploma in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, and Industrial Hygiene) is preferred.
- Minimum 3 year work experience in a Health & Safety role within the food (meat) processing industry.
- Working knowledge of OHSA.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification, or willing to complete.
- Current CPR and First Aid training, or willing to complete.
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively, with strong ability to influence others.
- Organized self-starter with proven ability to manage and effectively follow up on multiple projects and assignments and meet all deadlines.
- Excellent observational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good oral, written and communication skills; able to develop and maintain strong working relationships with production and office staff and external Auditors.
- Strong background in program and policy creation to help transition existing policies to align with ISO 45001 standards.
- Proficient in computer software, such as Microsoft Office.
- Fluent in English.
- Strong teaching, coaching, mentoring skills, willingness to train others.
- Ability to work in temperature controlled environment.

This is an in-person role 5 days per week at our fresh and frozen meat processing plant located at 10 Shorncliffe Road, Etobicoke, M9B 3S3 (near Kipling station). The hours are Monday to Friday from 2:00 pm to 11:30 pm with optional weekend work. Pay rate is $70,000 - $75,000 depending on experience.
