Location - This role is fully remote.
Applications are invited for a research associate position within the ENhancing Age Care Transition (ENACT) Quality program, led by Dr. Kaitlyn Tate. Dr. Tate is seeking a research associate to support ongoing research projects, contribute to the team's research, administrative, and educational activities, and assist in grant development for future research competitions. Coaching and mentorship will be provided for the role. The research program comprises a portfolio of ongoing projects funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Killam Trust and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta (MNA). These projects primarily focus on the care of older adults during transitions to and from facility-based care settings. Dr. Tate also co-leads work in these areas with the MNA. The research associate will lead research activities under the direction of Dr. Tate, supporting data analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of findings, report writing, manuscript preparation, knowledge translation, and grant applications. They will also participate in project planning, team meetings, workshop development, and foster collaboration across disciplines and partners. The ideal candidate should have the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. It is an expectation that the Research Associate will be currently engaged in equity-oriented research. The successful candidate must have a proven record of research accomplishment, and they will have the opportunity to be a co-author on relevant manuscripts if co-authorship criteria are met, and a co-applicant for research funding if such an opportunity arises. They will work in a hybrid model (in-person or virtual, as applicable).
Responsibilities
Helps to set research program objectives, design research projects, implement, and oversee research activities in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
Encourages and assists in the development of applied health research with a particular focus on older persons' care, health system performance and Indigenous health.
Interacts with colleagues, trainees, knowledge users, rightsholders and others within and outside of the University of Alberta.
Contributes to quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and report writing.
Supports grant application development and knowledge translation activities.
Liaise, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, with researchers, knowledge users and community members/rightsholders at collaborating institutions or organizations, and identify future research collaboration opportunities.
Ensures compliance with University guidelines, policies, research ethics, and agreements with project partners.
Complies with First Nations Ownership Control Access to and Possession of data principles(OCAP) and the six principles of Métis research ethics where applicable.
Prepare documents for research ethics board applications and amendments.
Assist in data preparation for presentations, and in writing and revising research manuscripts and reports.
Supports workshop planning and implementation.
Contributes to the dissemination of research findings to knowledge users and decision-makers, and present findings at team meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences.
Supervises and mentors research assistants and trainees.
Provides administrative support such as managing CVs and resumes, organizing files, formatting and submitting manuscripts to academic journals, developing a handbook for the research program, budget reconciliation, expense reimbursements, and time approvals for research assistants.
Maintains professional development by staying current with evidence and attending relevant workshops and conferences.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Completed PhD degree in a related discipline such as: nursing, sociology, political science, women's studies, Indigenous studies, community health or public health
Training in qualitative and/or quantitative social or health science research methods
Demonstrated initiative, independence, organization and productivity
Experience coordinating social/health science research projects with diverse organizations and professionals
Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
Excellent writing ability
Excellent computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Office, and Internet applications
Experience working under short time lines, with proven ability to adhere to strict schedules and deadlines
Sensitivity to ethical issues; ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality
The Following Qualifications Are An Asset
A background in nursing or another health sciences profession
Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) or community-based research experience
Experience with SPSS, STATA, and/or SAS
Knowledge of critical theory, anti-racism theory, postcolonial theory and/or
Experience with Indigenous research methods will be an asset.
Experience working with Indigenous organizations
Experience with various knowledge synthesis approaches (including realist reviews)
Experience in research focused on older adult care or quality of life
Familiarity with the University of Alberta administrative structure, policies and procedures about research
This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $43,078 to $59,246.
The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
