The Team
Located in Montreal, the Mattel Building Sets campus is a creative hub focused on developing Mattel Brick Shop and Mega Bloks products for a global audience. The campus brings together cross-functional teams who collaborate to support innovation, creativity, and the evolution of iconic building brands. As part of Mattel's global organization, the Montreal campus offers an inspiring environment where ideas grow and teams work together to bring imaginative building experiences to life.
The Opportunity:
As a Lead Building Experience Designer, you are responsible for maintaining and shaping the vision, the quality and consistency of Mattel Building Sets during the building and play phases. This role ensures that the journey from opening a box to completing a model is smooth, intuitive, delightful, and enriching.
You will be part of the Product Design team that create, develop and execute innovative construction toys.
As a strategist, designer and leader, you will work in close collaboration with cross-functional teams (design, engineering, marketing, quality, etc) to ensure the play experience is align with the intention of the different product element while captivating kids and families around the globe.
What Your Impact Will Be
Lead and mentor the Building Experience Design team to ensure clear, consistent, engaging and intuitive step-by-step building instructions, across the portfolio.
Collaborate with product designers, engineers, and graphic designers to define the most optimal construction sequence.
Partnering with the team manager and working closely with project managers, help prioritize the team workloads while ensuring a uniform experience aligned with brand identity.
Coordinate and oversee playtests and usability studies to observe how users build and interact with Mattel Building Sets products, iterate on design when needed.
Create and present building journeys that emphasize fluidity, surprise, and a sense of accomplishment.
Produce digital renderings using tools such as Solidworks and Adobe Creative Suites.
Conduct competitive analysis.
Define and ensure the building experience adheres to Mattel's quality standards.
Contribute to the evolution of design guidelines, process improvements and best practices.
What We're Looking For
DEC or Bachelor in Industrial Design or equivalent experience;
Minimum 5 to 8 years of relevant experience; including significant leadership experience;
Passion for design and strong interest in the construction toy industry;
Strong project presentation skills, positive influence and decision-making ability;
Broad vision with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, varying in complexity.
Solid sense of initiative, responsibility, quality and attention to detail;
Interest in user-centric product design approach;
Sensitivity to storytelling;
Creativity and resourcefulness in problem-solving;
Natural, supportive, and inspiring leadership style;
Willingness to continuously learn, improve and evolve;
Good proficiency with 3D-2D softwares, (SolidWorks, Adobe Suite, etc);
Knowledge of plastic materials is an asset;
Interest & knowledge of pop culture, video games, figurine collection, cinema;
Comfortable in French; English is an asset.
