Purpose of Position:Reporting to the Supervisor Facilities and Parks, this position will perform a variety of duties related to the maintenance and upkeep of all municipal parks and open spaces including the maintenance of sports turf, landscape areas, municipal gardens, tree and plant inventories, with a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes.
Qualifications:- Grade 12 or equivalent with preference given to a college degree in turf maintenance and/or horticulture or arboriculture field.
- Must be a Registered Playground Practitioner.
- Experience and ability to operate relevant mechanical equipment including small tools, chainsaws, garden tractor, lawn equipment, driving a 1 ton with a trailer, etc.
- Must have valid Class G drivers license with clean drivers abstract.
- Must have DZ drivers licence, ARZ/AZ must be obtained.
- Experience on splash pad and/or playground maintenance and operations would be an asset.
- Mechanical aptitude for lawn equipment, etc.
- OHSA and other relevant legislation.
- Municipal health and safety policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of MS Office including but not limited to Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of standards and guidelines related to the setup of sports field dimensions for baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, etc., as well as proper lining and grooming procedures and requirements for safe playable surfaces.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of standards and guidelines related to the care and maintenance of annual and perennial shrubs and flowers, as well as mulching, trimming and care of trees.
- Understanding of garden care including removal of weeds and unwanted growth in beds and contained planting areas.
Major Responsibilities:
- Seasonally assign and oversee daily work tasks in the Parks, Sports Fields, and Municipal Landscape areas.
- Maintenance/inspection of municipal parks to include gardens, shrubs, trees, equipment and maintain all documentation.
- Assist in day-to-day activities of the Sports Field operation as directed.
- Maintenance/inspection of outdoor sport fields and associated facilities including players' benches, backstops, fence lines, bleacher and public bathroom areas in cooperation with scheduled users and tournaments.
- Maintenance/inspection/pruning of park trees and plant inventory.
- Assist in execution of landscape plans.
- Assist in the development of programs such as Integrated Pest Management and Maintenance Management Systems.
- Assist with set-up and tear down of special events and functions.
- Maintenance/inspection of walking and biking trails.
- Performance of weekly, monthly and annual playground inspections and maintenance of all documentation related to these inspections as directed.
- Assist with winter control duties as directed.
- Organize tools and resources required to carry out assigned tasks ensuring that vehicles and equipment are operated and maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ensure all surfaces are safe for daily use.
- Maintain accurate records of daily tasks and report sports field activities and deficiencies to the Supervisor Facilities and Parks.
- Apply pesticides as directed and make recommendations regarding necessary spray programs.
- Complete all required repairs in a timely and effective manner.
- Performance of other related duties as may be necessary and assigned from time to time by the Supervisor - Facilities and Parks

- Performing duties using established practices and policies.
- Bending, lifting, stooping, working above shoulder, walking, standing, and sitting.
- As prescribed by the collective agreement, during summer season, assist with training and overseeing summer students and seasonal Parks employees.
Interpersonal skill to liaise with management and the public in a friendly and co-operative manner.

Environment
- Works outside. May be required to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Some travel may be required.
Control over Work Schedule
- Hours of work as prescribed by the current collective agreement; between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday to Sunday (40 hours per week, 5 consecutive days, 8 hours) including working on weekends.
- Oncall as prescribed by the collective agreement.
- Overtime as specified in the Collective Agreement with IBEW Local 636
