ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Forestry, this position implements forest restoration and management projects on conservation area, municipal, and private lands to help meet the objectives of CVC's Strategic Plan and Sustainable Forest Management Plan. Duties include supervising and leading field crews in the collection of forest inventory and monitoring data, site preparation and tending activities for tree planting and harvest operations, invasive species control, tree planting, and tree cutting/harvesting. Duties may also include tree marking, harvest monitoring, entering and compiling data in databases, writing summary reports, and maintaining equipment. This position liaises with partners and collaborates with other CVC teams, including marketing and communications, for forest management activities occurring on CVC lands.

This position is based out of the Warwick Conservation Centre in Caledon.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, ecology/biology, environmental science, restoration or natural resource management
  • Pesticide Applicators License with Forestry certification
  • Valid First Aid and CPR
  • Valid Class 'G' Ontario driver's license in good standing
  • Class A Restricted or above considered an asset
  • Chainsaw certification and operating experience considered an asset
  • Ontario Tree Marking Certification an asset

Experience

  • 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience in forestry and restoration field work, including tree planting, site preparation, tending, vegetation/invasive species management, effectiveness monitoring, and tree cutting
  • Experience with the safe hauling, loading, and unloading of trucks and trailers
  • Experience with the safe operation of chainsaws, farm tractors, farm implements, mechanical reforestation planters, tank sprayers, pesticide application, ATVs and landscape maintenance equipment
  • Experience providing customer service to clients for technical guidance, recommendations, project design and implementation
  • Experience with data entry and preparation of draft reports

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • A background and understanding of forest restoration and management, mensuration, ecological principles, and forest management and stewardship issues in southern Ontario 
  • Knowledge of the design, preparation of tree planting plans and projects 
  • Knowledge of the silvics of common trees in southern Ontario
  • Proven ability to read, interpret and lead a crew in implementing planting plans and other operational forestry and restoration plans
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct restoration and silviculture effectiveness monitoring sampling methodologies
  • Strong native and non-native plant species identification and knowledge
  • Strong non-native invasive forest insect pests and diseases identification and knowledge
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and navigate using GPS, orthophotos or aerial imagery
  • Ability to work independently and in a leadership role, and to think creatively in tackling obstacles and developing solutions
  • Efficient problem solving, multi-tasking and creative thinking skills
  • An understanding of occupational health and safety and related regulations to ensure a safe working environment for staff
  • Proven research, analytic and report writing skills
  • Interpersonal skills in conflict resolution with conservation area visitors and other staff
  • Presentation and communication skills
  • Strong computer literacy skills, including MS Word, Excel, Access and GPS/GIS platforms 

SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS 

Project Implementation 

  • Lead and work as a member of a field crew implementing forestry tree planting projects, including site preparation and tending, and vegetation/invasive species management
  • Lead and work as a member of a field crew assessing field conditions and collecting data to support the drafting of planting and forest management plans/prescriptions for forestry projects
  • Lead field-establishment, labeling and tagging of monumented photos
  • Organize and lead field crews in effectiveness monitoring data collection for tree planting and other forestry projects
  • Implement forest management projects as a crew member, including tree marking, tree cutting/harvesting, and inspecting and monitoring harvest operations
  • Operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, which includes trucks, trailers, farm tractors (with implements), RTVs, ATVs, sprayers, water pumps, and a wide variety of handheld power tools
  • Support other CVC programs such as Nursery Operations, Hazard Tree Management, and Invasive Species Management as needed

Program Support

  • Support the Program Manager and Senior Coordinator with the development and update of technical documents and reports related to forestry, including best practices, and standard operating procedures
  • Collect, track, enter and analyse field data in databases
  • Support the Senior Coordinator in the sourcing, purchasing, and procurement of materials and equipment
  • Maintain records for forestry programs including, resource and staff ledgers, vehicle and equipment mileage sheets, hourly staff timesheets, personnel attendance records, and fuel consumption

Supervision   of Staff

  • Supervise and organize hourly field staff in forestry activities that include tree planting, vegetation management, and inventory and monitoring data collection
  • Support the Technician 1 and Senior Coordinator to hire, train, supervise, and evaluate hourly staff to complete all assigned duties, including the use of herbicides, forestry, and farm equipment
  • Undertake hourly employee performance evaluation, objective setting, and continuous learning
  • Ensure a safe working environment around the facility and in the field through ongoing health and safety training of staff

Collaboration and Communications

  • Liaise with communications staff and assist with the creation of notifications and education for the public on forestry projects occurring on CVC property
  • Prepare and deliver reports, presentations, and information to internal staff
  • Assist with the development of social media posts and other communication products
