Your opportunity:
The Academic Advisor, International Experience serves as a key member of the student advising team in the Academic Advising & Registrar's Office at University College.
Reporting to the Associate Registrar, Advising & Academic Success, the Academic Advisor, International Experience provides academic advising services to UC students and assists them in making decisions affecting their academic progress in the Faculty of Arts & Science from admission to graduation. The Academic Advisor advises students on admissions, program and course enrolment, fees and finances, student records, petitions and requests for special consideration, and general Arts & Science policies and procedures. The Academic Advisor assists students with a wide range ofacademic issues and concerns, including interpretation of University policies and procedures, selecting courses and programs, meeting degree requirements, managing personal or health issues which impact their academic progress, and planning pathways for their future. The incumbent provides referrals to students who require specialized services to other supports on campus, including the UC Success Commons, Accessibility Services, Career Exploration & Education, the Academic Success Centre, the Centre for International Experience, and Student Crisis Response/Student Academic Progress. The work of the Academic Advisor is accomplished through both scheduled and drop-in appointments, as well as group sessions and seminars.
The Academic Advisor, International Experience provides a specific focus on the needs of, support for, and outreach to UC's international student population, working closely with staff at the University's Centre for International Experience (CIE). The Academic Advisor supports international students who may be experiencing transitional or other difficulties through the provision of appropriate advice, effective referrals, and supportive resources. Additionally, the Academic Advisor, International Experience serves as a resource andadvisor for both international and domestic students who are planning on pursuing learning opportunities abroad (e.g. CIE Exchange Programs, Summer Abroad, etc.)
The Academic Advisor, International Experience works as a collaborative member of the academic advising team assisting with balancing the advising work schedule and supporting the work of the team in the Academic Advising & Registrar's Office. The incumbent contributes to the development of enhanced services for students to promote retention and improve the overall student experience at University College. The incumbent also assists with the delivery of events for newly admitted students, as well as the provision of front line advising services in the Academic Advising & Registrar's Office.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Advising students on the development of their educational plans
- Advising students on program and/or course matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
- Interpreting academic regulations, program and degree requirements
- Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
- Leading seminars and/or workshops
- Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum four (4) years of relevant experience providing academic advising to undergraduate in student service and academic advising role(s) at a post-secondary institution.
- Experience providing academic advising to international students.
- Experience providing detailed program information to students coupled with a knowledge of the University environment and structure, undergraduate policies, procedures and regulations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using ACORN/ROSI and Degree Explorer.
- Experience organizing and presenting workshops.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, combined with strong intercultural communication abilities and an understanding of international students' experiences and needs.
- Ability to exercise tact, judgement and diplomacy, especially when dealing with confidential information or complaints.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to demonstrate attention to detail with strong time and organizational skills and ability to prioritize high volume and competing demands.
- Experience interpreting and applying University of Toronto policies and procedures.
- Must be able to cope with a constantly changing and complex set of academic regulations.
- Demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience in a College Registrar's Office.
- Familiarity with the organizational structure, policies, and procedures in the Faculty of Arts & Science.
