PARKS OPERATOR I – URBAN FORESTRY
4 Month Term West Kelowna's Parks Department is looking to fill a term position as a Parks Operator I – Urban Forestry to perform forest fuel management work.
Summarized Position Responsibilities: The Parks Operator I – Urban Forestry position supports the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the City of West Kelowna's parks, urban forest, and related infrastructure. This role involves using a variety of hand and power tools to perform tree and vegetation maintenance, including pruning, planting, removal, raking, and forest fuel modification work in accordance with prescribed reports and instructions. The position assists with general landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks, operates and services equipment and tools, and supports Urban Forestry Operators with tree and shrub care, including climbing, remedial work, and removals. Work is completed across multiple locations throughout the City, such as parks, facility grounds, urban forests, and street tree programs. The role requires safe handling and storage of materials, adherence to Occupational Health and Safety regulations, and active participation in risk management and public safety practices. Our Ideal Candidate:

Grade 12 education or equivalent

1 year of related experience

Completion of an 8-hour WorkSafeBC recognized course in the safe operation of chainsaws

Basic First Aid

Class 5 BC Driver's License

Pesticide Applicator's Certificate (considered an asset)

Fall Protection (considered an asset)

Aerial Lift (considered an asset)

Traffic Control (considered an asset)

Certification in Hazard Tree Risk Management inspections (considered an asset)

Class 5 BC Driver's License with Heavy Trailer Endorsement (considered an asset)

Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work outside in the presence of all types of weather conditions

Working knowledge of arboriculture methods, standards and practices, City and Parks safety protocols, and arboriculture and utility arboriculture safe work procedures

Necessary knowledge of safe working and operating procedures related to equipment and tools and work procedures required to ensure public safety

Knowledge and previous experience operating various pieces of equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, weed eaters, lawnmowers, saws, a variety of hand tools, etc.

Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Able to courteously deal with the public, contractors, and coworkers under stressful conditions and/or tight timelines

Ability to work flexible hours, including shift work and emergency call outs
