Position Overview Dokainish & Company is seeking an Intermediate Cost Specialist to provide cost estimating, cost planning, and cost control support across multiple capital projects within a national science and research facility renewal program.
This role will work within a collaborative program team to support the delivery of accurate cost estimates, budget tracking, cost reporting, and procurement analysis. The successful candidate will have a solid foundation in quantity surveying and cost management, with the ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously in a structured program environment.Key Responsibilities Cost Estimating and Planning
  • Prepare cost estimates and quantity take-offs for architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical scope across multiple projects
  • Support the development of elemental cost plans, cost breakdown structures, and project budgets
  • Assist in the preparation of lifecycle cost analyses and cost comparisons
  • Contribute to cost optimization and value engineering exercises under senior guidance
Cost Control and Budget Tracking
  • Support budget development, tracking, and monitoring across assigned projects
  • Review contractor pricing, bids, claims, and change order submissions
  • Assist with cost variance analysis and identification of cost risks
  • Maintain accurate cost records and tracking systems
Reporting and Program Support
  • Support the preparation of cost reports, forecasts, and financial summaries
  • Contribute to benchmarking, cost data collection, and historical cost database maintenance
  • Assist with procurement cost evaluations and bid analysis
  • Support senior cost specialists and program leadership as required
Key Deliverables

  • Cost reports and forecasting contributions
Required Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Certifications /Other
  • Progress toward CIQS designation (PQS) is preferred
  • CIQS membership or eligibility considered an asset
  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain Federal Government Reliability Status security clearance
Experience
  • 5–10 years of cost consulting or quantity surveying experience in the construction or infrastructure sector
  • Experience supporting institutional, commercial, or infrastructure capital projects
  • Experience working across multiple projects in a program or portfolio environment preferred
Technical Competencies
  • Strong cost estimating and quantity surveying skills
  • Working knowledge of architectural, structural, and building systems
  • Proficiency with cost estimating software and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with project controls and cost management processes
Professional Competencies
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
