Location: Port Hood/Inverness/Cheticamp/Pleasant Bay/Margaree, NS

Position: Full-time, Seasonal (35 hours per week; May - August 2026)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Recreation Team Lead supports the delivery of recreation programs, activities, and camps within assigned communities across the Municipality during the summer season. Reporting to the Recreation Summer Student Coordinator, the Team Lead provides on-site leadership and guidance to Summer Recreation Students, assists with daily program operations, and supports safe, inclusive, and engaging program delivery. This role acts as a key link between the Coordinator and Summer Students, helping ensure programs are delivered consistently, safely, and in alignment with departmental expectations. Travel within the Municipality is required.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist with the delivery of summer recreation programs, camps, events, and activities, including program setup, takedown, and on-site support.
  • Lead and support program activities for participants of varying ages and abilities.
  • Monitor activities to ensure participant safety, inclusion, and positive engagement.
  • Support attendance tracking and basic program documentation as directed by the Coordinator.
  • Provide day-to-day direction, mentorship, and support to Summer Recreation Students.
  • Assign tasks, monitor performance, and model professional conduct and leadership behaviour.
  • Assist with staff scheduling, break coverage, and communication of daily program needs.
  • Act as point of contact for Summer Students during program hours, escalating issues to the Coordinator as required.
  • Provide courteous, professional customer service to participants, parents/guardians, and members of the public.
  • Respond to routine inquiries and direct more complex concerns to the Coordinator.
  • Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants and oversee activities to ensure participant safety and appropriate behaviour.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and provide feedback to the Coordinator.
  • Represent the municipality in a positive and professional manner and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with co-workers to promote a safe and positive workplace culture, attending safety meetings and training as required.
  • Operate assigned municipal vehicles with GPS systems and regularly verify that the system is functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, ethical conduct, and compliance with municipal policies, privacy legislation, and professional standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or currently enrolled in post-secondary education.
  • Required to live within the Municipality of the County of Inverness.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification considered an asset.
  • Previous supervisory experience with children, youth, or community programs considered an asset (paid or volunteer).
  • Training, knowledge, or certification in High Five, Fundamental Movement Skills, OCC Field-leader training, NLS National Lifeguard are considered an asset.
  • Class 5 Driver's License, with clean drivers abstract considered an asset.

  • Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.
  • Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.

  • Report all near-misses and incidents immediately.
  • Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
  • Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
