Position Title:    Elders Services Bus Driver

Reports to: Manager, Elders Services

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Elders Services, the Elders Services Bus Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient and organized transportation to our Haisla members 55+ years and over. The Elders Services Bus Driver must be committed to the safety and welfare of our elders.

The successful candidate will assist our Elders Services department in creating opportunities to include our Haisla members 55+ years and over in not only attending regular programming at the Elders Centre, but on outings and events as well.

We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate the bus in a safe manner and follow all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the school bus to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Pick up and drop off elders at designated locations.
  • Ensure the safety and welfare of all passengers while on the bus.
  • Provide assistance to passengers as needed (e.g., those with various mobility levels).
  • Communicate respectively and effectively with elders, staff, and caregivers.
  • Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Contact the Manager, Elders Services as needed for support and/or direction in situations such as inclement weather, delays, or emergencies.
  • Use and adhere to route information as provided and do not provide transportation for unauthorized riders to and/or from unauthorized stops.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of the vehicle.
  • Complete reports as requested in a timely manner. These will generally include vehicle incident reports.
  • Maintain daily logs and records as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to the elders, families, and personnel and fulfill obligations to respect protection of privacy.
  • Provide companionship and engage elders in conversation and recreational activities, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being.
  • Encourage and support elders participating in Elders Centre activities, including cultural events, wellness activities, educational workshops, arts and crafts, and social gatherings.
  • Work cooperatively with the staff team, volunteers, other departments, and community resources to support inclusive practice and address the needs of all community elders.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid BC Class 4 unrestricted driver's license or higher with a clean driving record and current driver's abstract.
  • Experience operating passenger vehicles, preferably with seniors or vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to assist passengers with various mobility levels.
  • First Aid/CPR training required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of c'imo'ca and surrounding areas is an asset.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respective, cooperative, and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and patient with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being of the elders.
  • Ability to flex a work schedule (with prior notice given) that may include weekends and evenings.
  • Be creative, take initiative, enthusiastic, and a sense of humour.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $22.95/hr - $28.35/hr
