HR Generalist
Job Purpose:
The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting a respectful, equitable, and psychologically safe workplace within NECHC by providing comprehensive HR services across all functional areas, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, policy administration, and compliance. Reporting to the Director of HR & Admin, this role plays a key part in fostering a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace aligned with organizational values and sector-specific requirements. The role will closely work with The Director of HR, Recruitment Coordinator, LROs ,union representatives, and employees.
This role supports employees with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including individuals from marginalized communities, and recognizes the impact that trauma, systemic barriers, and health inequities may have in the workplace.
Key Responsibilities:- Support the Recruitment Coordinator in coordinating the full-cycle recruitment including job postings, screening, interviewing, reference checks, onboarding and orientation for new employees in accordance with relevant human resources policy and procedures and collective agreement.
- Participate in health and safety initiatives and managing Worker's Compensation (WCB) claims, support return-to-work programs, manage leaves of absence (LOAs) and workplace accommodations in a compassionate and timely manner.
- Support the implementation and interpretation of collective agreements. Participate in joint labour-management meetings and in support to the management team, may participate in grievance resolution processes at stage one (1).
- Provide guidance on HR policies and best practices to the management team, including facilitating conflict resolution, managing grievances, and supporting progressive discipline or termination processes, ensuring they are applied consistently and in alignment with the collective agreement, employment standards, occupational health and safety, and human rights legislation.
- May conduct investigations to recommend appropriate actions including disciplinary/administrative measures and probation extensions.
- May participate in collective bargaining and in negotiation committees.
- Participate in the development and implementation of internal procedures and policies.
- Along with the Manager of Administration, coordinate staff training initiatives, including mandatory training and leadership development. Track learning plans and training compliance.
- Support payroll processes by ensuring accurate data entry and coordination with finance/payroll staff.
- Maintain accurate, confidential employee files and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) data, generating reports and HR metrics as required.
- Partner with leaders to coach, develop, and drive a positive performance culture that supports continuous growth, clear expectations, and employee success.
- Collaborate with the HR Manager on strategic HR initiatives, training, and continuous improvement projects.

Education and Experience:
- 3–5 years of progressive HR experience, ideally in a multi-site or healthcare environment.
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of employment standards, human rights, and demonstrated knowledge with NS Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation.
- Experience with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience in a unionized setting is considered an asset.
- CPHR or other HR designations are considered an asset.
- Strengths and abilities with task management and organizational skills, capable of handling high-volume workloads within tight deadlines.
- Professional, collaborative attitude, strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and respect for confidentiality.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural humility.
- Confident knowledge of MS Office Suite required (Excel, Word, MS Outlook).
- Experience with collective bargaining an asset.
