We are currently seeking a knowledgeable full-time Engineered Wood Products (EWP) Designer to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to work from either our Olds or Airdrie, AB location, based on the candidate's preference.

About the Role

Reporting to the General Manager, you will play a key role in supporting construction projects by providing expert guidance on engineered wood products, trusses, and building materials. You'll work closely with customers, the contract sales team, and truss design staff to deliver accurate designs, estimates, and project coordination.

This role is ideal for someone who loves problem-solving, enjoys working with builders and contractors, and brings both technical and customer‑service expertise to fast‑paced project environments. Key role responsibilities also include:

Engineered Wood & Truss Design

  • Design engineered wood products using specialized industry design software
  • Determine project materials, structural requirements, costs, and design options
  • Read and interpret residential construction blueprints and specifications

Sales Support & Customer Service

  • Provide quotations, process sales orders, and coordinate special orders
  • Prepare complete building-material lists and cost summaries
  • Track all sales activities, permit leads, and follow-ups to support sales growth
  • Cover the contractor sales counter as required

Project Coordination & Production Support

  • Prepare cut lists based on design specifications
  • Coordinate with yard operations to ensure accurate, on-time deliveries
  • Monitor order progress and communicate with clients throughout the project
  • Support other branches with engineered wood or truss-related expertise when needed

Internal Collaboration & Administrative Duties

  • Work closely with the contract sales team and truss design staff to support project requirements
  • Create spreadsheets, documentation, and customer contact records
  • Use current pricing lists while negotiating large orders; obtain approvals when required
  • Identify cross-selling and referral opportunities across departments
  • Participate in special projects assigned by the Contract Sales Manager or General Manager

What We're Looking for in You

Education & Technical Background

  • Post-secondary diploma in Architectural Technology, Civil/Construction Technology, Engineering Design, or a related technical or business field (preferred)
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with engineered wood product design and specifications
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design or visual drafting software (required)
  • Strong measurement skills and good visual/technical aptitude
  • Knowledge of hardware, lumber, and building materials (asset)

Sales, Customer Service & Business Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of sales experience
  • Exceptional customer service skills with a motivated, patient attitude
  • Strong communication and sales abilities
  • Retail experience in a building materials or construction-related environment (asset)

Industry & System Knowledge

  • Understanding of industry trends, pricing, and local building codes (asset)
  • Experience with POS or computer-based inventory/sales systems
  • Eager to learn and stay up to date with industry trends and product knowledge
