The Casual Recreation Operator 1 positions work in the arena from September to April/May. Operators ensure the GFL Twin Arenas' ice surfaces and facilities remain clean, safe, and well-maintained for all users. The role requires attention to detail, strong customer service, and mechanical and building maintenance skills. Operators report to the Arena Lead Hand and assist with casual staff as needed.
Key ResponsibilitiesIce Maintenance and Operation – Operate the Zamboni and hand/power edgers, build up and shave ice, perform blade changes, and operate the ice plant while monitoring data and performing minor preventative maintenance.
Facility Upkeep – Maintain arena cleanliness, perform minor repairs, handle garbage and recycling, conduct inspections, and assist with seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures.
Safety and Risk Management – Identify and prioritize risks, follow health and safety protocols, and address public safety incidents promptly.
Event Support – Assist with set-up and take-down of events, including sound and heating equipment.
Other Duties – Perform additional tasks as assigned to support arena operations.
High School Diploma or equivalent
2–3 years of related experience preferred (arena operations, facility maintenance, or similar)
Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean Driver's Abstract
CPR/AED certification required; RFP Arena Operator courses or Building Maintenance courses considered an asset
Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
Ability to work independently, outdoors in all weather conditions
Flexibility to work varying shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays
Shift work, often alone, in confined spaces and extreme cold
Physical demands include lifting, bending, shoveling, and operating equipment
Mental and sensory attention required for ice quality, safety, and operational monitoring
Independent decisions: Ice maintenance, facility upkeep, and immediate public safety incidents (daily)
Decisions requiring consultation: Budgetary issues, non-routine operational tasks, or health-related absences
Direct supervision: Assist casual staff as needed
Functional guidance: Provide technical advice and recommendations to the Arena Lead Hand
Hourly Wage: $25.16 – $26.22 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
