ROLE OVERVIEW As Design Manager, you will lead the coordination of all design disciplines across the project lifecycle. You will manage design programmes, approvals, and information flow, ensuring design deliverables are issued on time and to the required quality, supporting successful delivery on programme and in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.
KEY DUTIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES Design Programme & Information Control • Create, agree, and manage the design programme and information release plan, ensuring alignment with the overall construction programme. • Control design deliverables, RFIs, design queries, and design actions through structured trackers and governance. • Contribute to change control by identifying design impacts, issuing updates, and supporting approvals. Design Coordination & Approvals • Manage the design approval process for drawings, technical submittals, specifications, and samples using formal workflows. • Coordinate design consultants, specialist contractors, and internal teams to ensure accurate and compliant information. • Lead Contractor Design Proposals and maintain the design responsibility matrix and associated documentation. Stakeholder & Workshop Management • Collaborate closely with the project team and appointed external consultants/advisors to drive timely decisions. • Arrange, chair, and minute design workshops, technical reviews, and coordination meetings, ensuring clear ownership and actions. • Support tender and procurement activities by collating and reviewing tender packs with the commercial/QS team. Compliance, Quality & Building Control • Support the discharge of planning conditions in parallel with the design team. • Ensure completed works meet expected standards of build quality and finish. • Manage Building Control engagement, inspections, and compliance tracking to support sign-off. • Implement a practical QA recording system on site with the delivery team, coaching consistent adoption. General • Maintain accurate, consistent, and professional project records and reporting. • Undertake additional duties as required to support overall project delivery.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS • Degree or HND in a construction-related discipline (e.g., Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Project/Design Management). • Minimum 3 years’ experience in the construction industry, with proven design coordination/management exposure. • Strong understanding of multi-discipline design delivery and interfaces with commercial, procurement, and site teams. • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously while maintaining quality and deadlines. • Commercial awareness and working knowledge of cost drivers, procurement routes, and change control. • Strong problem-solving capability and ability to resolve issues quickly and effectively. • Excellent planning, organisational, analytical, and decision-making skills. • Confident communicator with strong stakeholder management skills (written and verbal). • Working knowledge of Health & Safety and wider regulatory obligations. • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Must have the right to work in the UK
