The Risk Engineering Platform team at Coinbase plays a critical role in safeguarding our platform and our millions of users against fraud and financial risks. We create flexible, scalable, and customizable engineering systems to detect and prevent fraud in real-time and scheduled workflows. Our mission is to enable business growth by managing financial risks effectively while ensuring the best possible user experience. Your Role
As a Senior Frontend Software Engineer on our Risk Engineering team, you will lead technical initiatives that significantly influence our risk detection and mitigation systems. You’ll manage complex projects from conception to deployment, mentor junior engineers, and establish technical standards to enhance the capabilities of the entire team. Your contributions will have a direct impact on millions of users and substantial transaction volumes. Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Delivery:
Author, review, and approve technical design documents for intricate features and systems; lead the delivery of end-to-end projects from implementation to monitoring; design and contribute to new systems and significant features based on informed judgment; manage projects of varying sizes from inception to production. System Architecture & Quality:
Proactively enhance code quality and address technical debt; identify and implement scalable solutions for team use; create systems or features that improve the team's delivery efficiency; lead troubleshooting and performance improvement efforts. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing:
Support, coach, and mentor junior engineers; share your expertise to amplify the team's impact; take ownership of critical work that accelerates the team's progress; collaborate with EMs and PMs to influence prioritization. What We Look For
Required Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in software engineering with a proven track record in delivering complex systems. Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and mentor other engineers. Deep expertise in at least one frontend framework (React, TypeScript). Experience building and scaling distributed systems in a production environment. Strong understanding of system design, architectural patterns, and trade-offs. Proficient in managing ambiguous requirements to achieve technical clarity. Preferred Qualifications:
Background in risk, fraud detection, or financial systems at scale. Familiarity with machine learning models in production settings. Experience with real-time event processing and streaming architectures (Kafka, Flink). Understanding of payment systems (ACH, cards, crypto) and typical fraud patterns. Experience with compliance and security standards. History of enhancing team productivity through tooling and process improvements. Technical Skills
Frontend Engineers Should Have:
Expert-level proficiency in React and TypeScript/JavaScript. Comprehensive knowledge of modern frontend architectures and performance optimization techniques. Experience with state management solutions and component design systems. Strong understanding of web security best practices and accessibility standards. Experience in creating complex, data-rich user interfaces. Proven track record of enhancing the frontend developer experience through tooling. Pay Transparency Notice:
The target annual salary for this position may range from $186,065 to $218,900 USD, depending on your work location. Full-time offers from Coinbase also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and a benefits package which incorporates medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) options.
