The Risk Engineering Platform team at Coinbase plays a critical role in safeguarding our platform and millions of users against fraud and financial risks. We develop adaptable, scalable, and customizable engineering systems that detect and prevent fraud in real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled workflows. Our ultimate goal is to facilitate business growth while effectively managing financial risks and ensuring an exceptional user experience. The Role As a Senior Software Engineer on the Risk Engineering team, you will take on technical leadership roles for comprehensive projects, influencing architectural decisions that shape our risk detection and mitigation systems. You will manage complex projects from start to finish, mentor junior engineers, and establish technical standards that elevate our team's overall capability. Your efforts will have a direct effect on millions of users and substantial transaction volumes. What You'll Be Doing Technical Leadership & Delivery Draft, review, and approve technical design documents for intricate features and systems. Lead the delivery of end-to-end projects, including implementation, deployment, and monitoring. Design, scope, and significantly contribute to the development of new systems and major features, leveraging your experience-driven judgment. Oversee one or multiple projects from inception to completion, regardless of complexity. Facilitate team rituals such as code reviews, on-call rotations, and incident response. Translate high-level ideas and ambiguous business requirements into functioning architectures. System Architecture & Quality Actively enhance code quality and tackle technical debt across team codebases. Identify, propose, and implement scalable solutions that can be utilized across the team. Build systems or features that enhance the team's ability to deliver top-quality work. Tackle high-impact debt and quality challenges while maintaining current systems. Lead troubleshooting, bug triaging, and improvements in performance and scalability. Ensure solutions are practical for teams within and outside your immediate function. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing Guide, mentor, and nurture junior engineers within your team. Share your knowledge to amplify your impact and enhance team capabilities. Improve the efficiency of fellow engineers through guidance and best practices. Take initiative on unowned or less appealing tasks to expedite team progress. Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Product Managers to advocate for project prioritization. What We Look For In You Required Qualifications 5+ years of software engineering experience with a proven history of delivering complex systems. Demonstrated capability to lead technical projects and mentor peers. Deep expertise in at least one modern frontend framework, preferably React and TypeScript. Experience in building and scaling distributed systems in production. Strong knowledge of system design, architectural patterns, and trade-offs. Ability to navigate ambiguous requirements and bring clarity to technical challenges. Experience leading incident responses and performing post-mortems. Preferred Qualifications Experience in risk management, fraud detection, or financial systems at scale. Familiarity with machine learning models in production environments. Experience with real-time event processing and streaming architectures (e.g., Kafka, Flink). Understanding of payment systems (ACH, cards, crypto) and their associated fraud patterns. Knowledge of regulatory compliance and security measures. A track record of enhancing team productivity through tools and process improvements. Technical Skills Successful Frontend Engineers Should Have: Expert-level proficiency in React and TypeScript/JavaScript. A deep understanding of modern frontend architectures and performance optimization. Experience with state management solutions and design systems for components. A strong knowledge of web security best practices and accessibility standards. Experience in crafting complex, data-rich user interfaces. A history of enhancing the frontend developer experience and tooling. Pay Transparency Notice:
Compensation for this position ranges from $186,065 to $218,900 USD, depending on your location. Full-time offers include bonus eligibility, equity, and comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
